I am going to try to make this a coherent post, instead of just posting excited keysmashing in size billion font, but if you want to talk about how this show is problematic or what aspects of the finale disappointed you, you will have to wait; I am too full of giddy joy.

Doctor Who 6x13, spoilers spoilers spoilers, excitement and capslock and hopefully some coherence. )
Not to squee anyone's harsh, because wow, AVOS-style delicious, wow, but:

1. INSPECTOR SPACETIME. There is a TV Tropes page, a forum for creating the canon, and even some tumblr confessions. I LOVE FANDOM SO MUCH. Also I ship Inspector/Sergeant, obvs.

2. POTTERMORE, fucking finally. I am still noodling about in Chapter One, mostly because wow that site has way too much traffic, but I would like to be friends with you guys? Please tell me who you are! Then I will feel less lonely and more like I am Doing It Right. Meanwhile I'm StormScarlet127, a name I still secretly believe means I am an Ororo/Wanda shipper.

Dear Apple,

For the love of God, could you make a product that has [a] a reasonable number of GBs (as opposed to a number of GBs that will accommodate only a thousand songs or something in the realm of fifty thousand) and [b] is not small enough to be a choking hazard? I understand that I can only have one or the other, so I have gone with a reasonably-priced touchscreen postage stamp that will happily play all my songs with some room to spare, but this is absurd.

Regards,
Aria

Anyway, just in time for a plane flight, Xander the iPod has finally given up the ghost. More or less. It should be unfrozen by morning, if past behavior is any indication, but it will never sync again, and it is becoming slowly, completely intractable. It's been a good five years, Xander. Or at least the first four were good.

...The iPod nano that I have ordered from the depths of the internet is a very pleasing shade of green and shall be called Loki. I am completely aware of the chaos I have called down upon myself, but whatever, it was my one ray of hilarity in this frustrating escapade, so, worth it.

Well, this week's Doctor Who was (almost) entirely perfect.

I am not actually up to Thoughts, because I am too busy having FEELINGS, but wow was that amazing.

I am writing so many things right now! But none of them are short, which is one of the reasons I haven't been posting fic constantly. (That, and one of the things I am writing is my NOVEL, which also cuts down on fic production.) One of the not-short things is a Good Omens fic, because I just did my semi-annual Good Omens reread, and instead of doing the reasonable thing and just jotting down some Aziraphale/Crowley to get it out of my system, I ... seem to have developed plot.

Then, as I tend to do these days, I ran to Amelia with it. Which resulted in:

Amelia: okay, anything else to figure out?
Amelia: ...like wtf happens in terms of events
Amelia: I mean, that should not be a chore, since GO is basically a string of ridiculous scenarios that are funny and happen to advance the plot
Aria: heh, yeah. I mean, I think I will just sort of ... write, and see what happens.
Aria: you do realize
Aria: that this is basically a bewildering scenario in which I am Terry Pratchett and you are Neil Gaiman
Amelia: we are writing the sequel to GO. Yeah.
Amelia: and hey, they said it didn't get written this way!
Amelia: like, everyone assumes it did, but it didn't
Amelia: "neil gaiman spouts ideas, brainstorms with Terry, Terry does actual writing in his own style"
Aria: ahaha, true! oh man. WE ARE WHAT FANDOM THINKS THEY ARE.
Thor deleted scenes! My god, it's like they left in all the Earth shenanigans and decided that Asgard and its beautiful scenery and Frigga having any lines at all and Loki's face were all less important than the Earth scenes! I ... do see how some of it was cut for pacing, but damn, nearly every deleted scene was a thing of joy and beauty forever.

More Loki scenes = WILD FLAILING. This is about half missing scene commentary and half me nattering on about character meta, because that's how I roll when I have new material for this film that I inexplicably have lots of feelings about. )

Brb, probably writing a billion more Loki fics. NOW WITH 100% MORE FRIGGA. And also additional Asgard sets!

Hello the internet! I am back from Dragon*Con, as caught up on my rlist as I can be bothered to be, and feeling completely dazed and flattened, although not actually ill (yet). I had an entirely fabulous time, and circumstances permitting I very much want to go again, though I don't think it will ever be the con of my heart -- far too terrifyingly crowded. That said, this was certainly one of the best weekends I've had in recent memory.

Con report! This is a highlights version rather than a blow-by-blow. Tom Felton, various Buffy shenanigans, Sylvester McCoy, the Yule Ball, and MARK SHEPPARD. )

So that was essentially my con! I loved the hotel we were staying in, because it looked like something out of Star Wars, and I loved the three-plus days of intense fannishness and all the enthusiasm, and I am so glad I went, and now I am going to sit quietly in a corner for a while until I am functional again.

And before I go, a meme!

Take any one of the fandoms you know I write/rec/read AND give me a type of AU (space opera AU, pirate AU, superhero AU, etc) or another time period (Ancient Rome, Regency England, etc). I will then explain the gist of the story I would write for that AU.

I should add that any historical AUs will be EXTREMELY INACCURATE, and you are probably safer with superheroes.

i. In the next few days I am road-tripping with [livejournal.com profile] 10littlebullets and [personal profile] srevans down to Dragon*Con, to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] rayruz & all their various fandom friends. I am ridiculous excited, because making fannish friends at cons is one of my favorite hobbies; also, I fully intend to do my best to act like a sane and friendly fan at Mark Sheppard and Mary McDonnell. I am a wee bit stressed, not because I am worried I will do something embarrassing in front of famous people of whom I am fond, but because I am not entirely sure how I will deal with basically four days straight of crowds of this magnitude. And I am getting sensory overload just looking at the program PDF. I'm still fairly sure this will be an awesome time, though.

ii. Other things I am fairly sure of: the universe is definitely hilarious enough to send me my actual Pottermore invite over D*C weekend. Tumblr is driving me slowly mad with all its talk of wands and Sortings and &c; but I've waited thirteen years for my owl, so I guess I can wait a little longer. In fact I will happily wait until next week! I do not want to miss, say, a panel about Time Lord ethics just because I really want to know whether I'm actually a Ravenclaw or not.

iii. In between chipping away at my NOVEL (right now it is NOVEL, in allcaps, because that's how it sounds in my head), this week I rewatched Avatar: the Last Airbender. It was ... really interesting, to follow up with AtLA right after rereading Harry Potter. Seriously, I could make a chart. Aang is Harry, Katara is Hermione, Sokka is Ron, Roku and Sozin are Dumbledore and Grindelwald, presumably Zuko is Draco, &c -- and it's fun to see how the canon ships would have to shift, or how obviously all Draco needed was Uncle Iroh. But really, it makes me deeply appreciate how many stunningly awesome ladies Avatar has, and how it treats nearly everyone as redeemable. It also makes me want to write bewildering fic in which Hogwarts is a school for benders and Harry is the worst avatar ever.

Anyway. Fear not, D*C compatriots, I am conversant in many fandoms! It will not be all ridiculous fusions all the time! Just some of the time.

That was ... Well, I am mostly going "Huh," but actually I spent quite a lot of this episode grinning my head off, so we will count it a win. 6x08; spoilers want to know what spoilers are. )
You guys, this threat is BRIGHT PINK.

In all seriousness, though, stay safe and evacuate if you need to? I know way too many people in New York and Massachusetts to feel okay about this. I should be fine, though; Irene's hitting Carolina tonight, but I'm somewhere in the red or orange bands, so I'm not going out tomorrow and we might lose power, but we shouldn't have anything too threatening.

Earthquakes, hurricanes ... I don't know about you guys, but I'm holding out for a rain of frogs next. At worst, kind of gross; at best, adorable.
...The whole house just shook inexplicably for thirty seconds, so I'm going to assume it's an earthquake. Quick googling doesn't turn up any news (oh self it happened like three minutes ago, even the internet isn't always that quick) but does tell me that my town is on a wee fault line, so it probably wasn't a hallucination.

Live in California on the fucking San Andreas fault for fifteen years: always out of town or asleep during quakes. In North Carolina a few months of the year for less than five years: EARTHQUAKE.

ETA: Not a hallucination! That seems to be all the details the news has so far; I hope everyone near the epicenter was all right.

I am beginning to suspect that I'm going to make Softer World remixes for all my visual media fandoms. (Note to self: this is not a challenge.) In any case, today's remixes are for White Collar; unsurprisingly, a lot of them are FEELINGS ABOUT BURKES.

40 White Collar Softer World remixes, both silly and serious; spoilery up through this half-season finale. )
+ There is the most amazing gelato place in town. Seriously, this gelato is so good that I dreamt of it.

+ I have been having lots of anxiety dreams. (Not about gelato.) Calm the fuck down, brain.

+ Remember that excellent animated show X-Men: Evolution? I missed it when it was actually airing, but the spark of fannishness set off by XMFC prompted me to watch it, and it is lovely. (Kurt is my forever boy, and Rogue is my forever girl, but I already knew these things.) Now that I have run out of that show, I seem to be watching Downton Abbey, which is also lovely but does have a dearth of mutants. I wonder what Maggie Smith's mutant power would be.

+ I never actually paid much attention to the HP films while they were happening, but apparently now they are over I mildly care? So tumblr has sent me down a rabbit hole of interviews with Dan Radcliffe. And this kid is delightful. The cognitive dissonance of being fannish about everything, though, means that I'm having the twin reactions of "I want to be your friend!" and "I want to track down all the RPF about you being BFFs with Gary Oldman."

+ Because my brain is back in the fandom groove re: HP but it's been years and there's so much fic and I don't know where to start, I have instead been reading the old fic I wrote which is still on my hard drive. And by old fic, I mean things I wrote when I was thirteen and hilarious. Seriously, when I was thirteen I had no idea how to write human emotions. Everyone reads like a cheerful sociopath! I was so popular with the other thirteen-year-olds, too. I just. I am so glad I kept all the old stuff; it greatly cheers me to see how much I have improved.

+ Aaaand, okay, I am writing a novel now. Like, a proper not-fic maybe-publishable sort of novel, that has actual characters and an outline and a plot, and a het romance (that will not become a triad I swear) (also there are lesbians) and I don't even know, you guys, I am mostly reminding myself to have fun instead of trying to write something publishable, because I suspect that's the quickest way to make it torture. Right now I really like it! So that's what I'm up to. Ahhhh.
I am starting to see (mostly on my tumblr dash) people getting Sorted, and getting assigned wands, and other such Pottermore shenanigans. I am a reasonable adult and I can patiently wait for my proper welcome email, but -- it comes to me that for whatever unfathomable reason I have been convinced since I was eleven that my wand is definitely rowan and phoenix feather, and that I can be Sorted however but I would be the most bewildered Hufflepuff. I am actually wicked excited for Sorting, because I have never been satisfactorily either a Gryffindor or a Ravenclaw, and I've occasionally had proposed to me that I am the cheerfullest Slytherin. But I am weirdly stressed about my wand!

This is all fairly amusing, but my inner child is apparently still waiting, slightly terrified, for her Hogwarts letter. My identityyyyyyy.
Weekend, therefore, ENDLESS MEMES.

If I made Cinderella, the audience would immediately be looking for a body in the coach.

Joyful flailing! FIC OF MY FIC.

Silvertongue (a lie for a lie) by [archiveofourown.org profile] inkasrain: It's a lie, and he probably knows it. Still, she thinks it's a good one. A post-script to Ragnarok, in which Darcy watches the battle and tells Loki a lie of her own. I ... am fairly sure apocalyptic deathfic shouldn't make me grin all over my face, but THIS DOES.

Hell, why not. NPR's top 100 SF/F books. Bold if you've read, italicize ones you fully intend to read, underline if it's a book/series you've read part but not all of, strikethrough if you never plan to read.

I have read approximately a quarter of these books. )

And, because this is skewed hilariously White Dudes Write Serious SF, [personal profile] eruthros has a post taking nominations for your top 100 speculative fiction works. Go forth! Nominate! I'm excited about the sort of recs that fandom is likely to generate.
