CUT SCENES, THIS IS MADNESS
Thor deleted scenes! My god, it's like they left in all the Earth shenanigans and decided that Asgard and its beautiful scenery and Frigga having any lines at all and Loki's face were all less important than the Earth scenes! I ... do see how some of it was cut for pacing, but damn, nearly every deleted scene was a thing of joy and beauty forever.
First of all: oh my goodness ASGARD. I love how apparently in addition to all the golden pillars and silky draperies it also has lovely gardens and lots of white stone in its out-of-doors, and it isn't just a shining city but also this wonderful rolling countryside all round. And this is the impression I got before they even fine-tuned the CGI! I would absolutely love to live on bewilderingly disc-shaped but beautiful Planet Asgard.
Frigga has LINES! It turns out that she is legitimately angry with Odin for banishing their son without consulting her! She wanted to be honest with Loki about his origins from the beginning, but let Odin have his way because he didn't want Loki to feel strange or different! (I'm fairly sure that Odin isn't as rubbish as a father as fandom has decided he is, but now I kind of want all the fic in which Odin and Frigga have parenting debates. Odin usually wins them using the "but I'm Odin Allfather" card, but Frigga usually has much saner notions of childrearing.) ANYWAY. The point is that I love Frigga a lot.
Of the Earth scenes, I don't think I mind they cut any of them, though it's a shame they didn't keep in the twenty seconds in which Thor goes to the diner to replace the mug he smashed, because that's a concrete moment in which he behaves like a decent person without it being ~big heroic sacrifice~. The scene where Erik drunkenly smashes his beer glass and then they stumble around singing was adorable, but I'm sad they didn't also film the shooting script bit where some guys try to pick a fight with Thor and call him "princess" and he still ignores them until Erik swings the first punch, because that's also a concrete moment. Oh Thor movie, why are you so much more interested in comedic moments and fight scenes in the final cut than you are in character arcs? Not that, speaking of comedy, I didn't love the little sequence where Darcy's running around in a panic with a little dog that she named Baker like ten seconds ago! DARCYYYYY.
Never mind all that, though, ALL THE LOKI SCENES. I. Ugh, I do understand why the intro to Sif and the Warriors Three, and Thor's conversations with Frigga and Loki, were cut -- it makes total sense to go right from Odin's slightly dickish "Only one of you can be king, but both of you were born to rule" line at bb!Thor and Loki straight to big cheering crowd spectacle of Thor's coronation ceremony, but I'm sure there could've been a smooth transition that also included the pre-coronation bits. Among other things, they give Thor himself a little depth, because he is nervous about being king, bless. (Mind you, here is where I digress and point out that this film makes no fucking sense if you insist it's about Thor's character growth -- he starts out as an essentially good-hearted guy who likes to hit things and tries to do the right thing, which in the beginning he believes is eradicating the Jotun; he ends the film as an essentially good-hearted guy who likes to hit things and has figured out that his own cultural narrative isn't the only one and that his dad approves of mercy and moderation. Weirdly Thor is actually a vehicle for other character arcs -- arguably Jane's, in that she finally begins to realize her scientific theories, and of course Loki's, in that the events Thor sets in motion finally break him down. But this film is only pretending to be about Thor, who is endearing but ultimately fairly static.)
ANYWAY, the pre-coronation scene! Ff, it's so nice to see Thor and Loki horsing around and giggling nervously and liking one another. There is of course the "nice feathers"/"cow" exchange, which is great and stupid and also kind of needed to be said about those helmets; what I completely adore, though, is Thor saying "You are incapable of sincerity," and Loki giving him a lovely earnest heartfelt speech about how sometimes he's envious but he's been looking forward to this day so long and Thor should never doubt that Loki loves him -- Tom Hiddleston, stop acting your socks off, I CANNOT DEAL. LYING WITH THE TRUTH, LYING WITH THE TRUTH. And then there is affectionate patting and Loki saying "Give us a kiss," and his frankly alarming beaming grin and I don't know what to do. I am entirely torn between the urgent desire to write more Thor/Loki porn and just wanting to cap that scene and doodle hearts around it and write "BROS" in sparkletext. Shut up, I have feelings.
Also, the scene where the guards come and give Gungnir to Loki -- the confusion and following horror on his face before it slides around to calculation! It remains that what I love best about Loki is how horribly tangled up he is and how much he just wants nice things but relentlessly self-sabotages. LOKI, LET ME LOVE YOUeven though it probably ends in Ragnarok! I ... am pretty sad they cut any Loki bits, honestly. But it's great we have them now!
Brb, probably writing a billion more Loki fics. NOW WITH 100% MORE FRIGGA. And also additional Asgard sets!

But oh man, watching these scenes after reading the comics is amazing, because I now have a whole ton of canon kicking around my head about how Loki keeps trying to be king and keeps SUCKING AT IT AND HATING IT. Also I really wish they'd had Balder in the movie.

But what would you do with Balder in the movie? I mean, idek what they do with Balder in canon, so.

I guess most of the really great Balder stuff is later on, after Loki's been "evil" for a while. But mostly I think it would have been interesting to have a third brother in the mix for a different dynamic. Although in the comics, I guess Balder doesn't know he's their brother till later? OH WHATEVER, THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN TOO COMPLICATED. But they originally planned to have in the movie, so I guess they had some idea. Possibly I just really wanted Loki to have someone to interact with once he was king.

(I remain convinced that Kenneth Branagh would have loved to make this movie 100% Asgardian family tragedy. The deleted scenes only bolster the argument further.)

The "now give us a kiss" scene was the only one that I was seriousl;y disappointed didn't make the cut, though, because it also gave the grown-up brothers a proper visual introduction. Also the bit where you see Loki talking to the guard, becfause it's awesome in retrospect.

I just wish they'd kept all the extra bits with Loki! And also with Frigga! It was nice to get introduced to Thor's buddies, but they're all followable without the intros. I think I just want all the Asgardian ruling family scenes, is what I'm saying here. LESS EARTH, MORE ASGARD.
