aria: ([holmes] three-patch problem)

three fannish things make a happy post

I have had a crazy week, full of accomplishment and CLEANING ALL THE THINGS. Details forthcoming; at the moment it is very important that I do the bullet-points version of reaction posts to the many and varied things I have seen between my bouts of doing things.

i. Inception! My non-spoilery thoughts are that it did basically everything that I expect a Christopher Nolan film to do (in both the positive ways, ie the effects, oh my heart the effects and also the Hans Zimmer score, and the negative ways, ie someone really needs to sit Mr. Nolan down and talk to him kindly about his women) -- so, because I knew what I was in for when I went in, I was free to just wildly enjoy myself. Apparently there is already a huge post of Inception resources for those of us who are fannishly inclined; I have not had time to take a look, but I am delighted with the sudden explosion of fanworks. And I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I already have a blank doc open entitled 'Ariadne in the Labyrinth,' which hopefully will soon be less blank and full of my Thoughts on Ariadne. (Spoilers: most of them are "dfkldsfjkfdfsd I LOVE HER.")

ii. Sherlock! SHERLOCK. To be honest, I flat-out adored it. I understand that, among other things, our main characters are still all white guys, and that Moffat is doing most of his bad bits of writing women without doing most of his good bits, and that does knock my squee down to bearable levels. On the other hand, the little nods to canon have seized me by the heart and won't let me go, and -- as I was processing at some length with [personal profile] oliviacirce -- the Sherlock/John dynamic gets me where I live. Because, you see, Jeremy Brett of the Grenada series is my quintessential Holmes, and Jude Law of the new film is my quintessential Watson, but these two guys, this particular Sherlock and John, are my quintessential Holmes'n'Watson, these two mad, fucked-up, brilliant people who are actually capable of understanding each other.

I know a lot of people thought that the possibility of gay was textually brought up in order to be dismissed and made into a running joke, and I can see how that might happen, but from where I'm sitting, it genuinely hasn't happened yet. I really did read those scenes as John being bewildered at the suggestion because they'd only just met, and the scene in the cafe particularly as being less 'Straight man pretends to be okay with living in enlightened times but is actually quite glad his new flatmate is basically asexual' and more 'Man who genuinely doesn't give a damn one way or another is startled into asking if something is going on and is relieved to find out that they're both goddamn terrible at this social interaction thing, so maybe they should go solve crime.' And I do ship them. I ship them with quite a bit more expectation that they'd be functional in their dysfunction than I assume of most Holmes/Watson permutations. So yeah, I adored it.

Additionally, I've noticed that the vague suggestion that Benedict Cumberbatch (IS THAT NOT THE COOLEST NAME EVER BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH) should perhaps play the Twelfth Doctor. I ignored this suggestion because I am too busy loving Eleven to go around casting Twelve. However, someone on my flist -- I am sorry that I do not remember who you were! because your idea is fucking brilliant -- proposed that perhaps Cumberbatch should, instead, play Eleven's Master. And now I am completely weak in the knees, because I couldn't think of a single good candidate before, and I think he'd be perfect. He can do the weird young/old thing that Matt Smith does; he can do that calm, worrying sort of crazy; and he's just as odd-looking and of a comparable enough age to do a fantastic foil. If this doesn't happen now I will be a wee bit crushed.

iii. White Collar! This week's was charming without being memorable; it had a fun A-plot, but not even a fraction enough kinky subtext to get me jumping up and down and clapping like a seal, the way I often do. I'll be glad when show-time catches up with the end of Tiffani Thiessen's pregnancy, because I suspect that everything would be greatly improved by Moar Elizabeth.

Incidentally, USA filmed White Collar's panel at ComicCon. From it I have learned that Marsha Thomason (...and perhaps the whole cast, IDK) ships the OT3, that I am possibly a bit in love with Marsha Thomason and Tim DeKay, and that hopefully after episode six there should be Moar El. Also, the cast is adorable. <3

IS THAT NOT THE COOLEST NAME EVER BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH

I made that exact observation a day or two ago on AIM. That is the most fantastic name ever, homg.

It's hard to be more awesome than being named Cumberbatch.

OMG, Benedict Cumberbatch as The Master is the best idea in the history of ever. I was out on Tuesday night with someone who has his mobile number in her phone's address book (I know this only because I was programming my hairdresser's number in for her and did a comic double take) and I think I may ask her to suggest he hit Moffat up about this right the fuck now. If only you'd had this thought on Saturday, I could've stuck my head round the box partition at the Dr Who Prom on Sunday and mentioned it to the Moff myself, LOL.

You have the best ideas. I must open Photoshop immediately.

[personal profile] ravurian 2010-07-29 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. Wilco. Although, you know, I didn't even have to hit photoshop to find pictures of Cumberbatch and Tennant being cute together, so perhaps that meeting might already have planted the idea somewhere all on its own...

Of course, if it did happen, inevitably there would be RPS between Matt Smith and Benedict, and even more inevitably there would be a pairing name-smoosh... How long before people started talking about the awesomeness of the CumSmith?*

*I couldn't help it, sorry!

Benedict Cumberbatch looks like an extremely attractive alien and he has a hypnotic voice and I love hiiiiiim and I enjoyed the show despite its many flaws and will watch more, though I'm not head-over-heels. I really dug Martin Freeman's understated Watson, and their interactions worked for me totally.

perhaps Cumberbatch should, instead, play Eleven's Master.

I... I think my brain just fell over. Sweet merciful God, that's excellent.

Moffat can do so many things that irritate me, but snappy dialogue and making mischief with canon are my kryptonite. And I'm embarrassingly easy for a decent Watson characterization. This show is almost my ideal happy place.

I LOVE MY LIFE RIGHT NOW because there have been TWO NEW SHERLOCK HOLMES-ES with in the space of a few months! *dances*

This is actually the first version I've seen that doesn't make me ship them like mad. Mainly because... Cumberbatch's Sherlock, to me, doesn't seem like an adult. He seems like a six-year-old who just happens to be really good at solving crimes, so is simultaneously controlled, looked down on, and exploited by the Real Adult Policemen. And John and Mycroft, at the moment, are there as his keepers. Putting this particular Holmes into any sort of romantic situation seems like... emotional pedophilia? So I'm hoping that over the course of the series Mycroft and John develop from caregivers into brother and S.O/friend, respectively, to Grown-Up (or at least growing-up) Sherlock.

And oh my god, Benedict Cumberbatch as the Eleven's Master. That would be amazing.

I will definitely be looking at that list of inception resources. Despite my better judgment and a pile of finals work to do, I've been writing an Arthur/Ariadne fic since about 20 minutes after I got back from seeing the movie.

[identity profile] norgbelulah.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm up to almost 4,000 words and then some written out in my carry-around notebook. It started out as just them meeting up after the movie, but it's coming out to be something like a debriefing of the events of Fischer's dream, seeing that I realized Arthur would have absolutely no idea exactly what went on while he was still in the second level.

Here's hoping I can get it done soon!

HEE, AWESOME, other people besides me were suggesting Cumberbatch as 12?! I would like to have a break from the Master, which is why I still support him as 12-- but only if Matt Smith gets bored, oh, ten years down the road or something. :p

(want to have your mind really blown? Matt Smith auditioned for Holmes and didn't get it)

And Cumberbatch's full name--Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch--is even MORE hilariously British.

...Wikipedia also tells me that Cumberbatch actually got offered 11 and turned it down, but wants to have an on-going role on DW, so who knows! You may get your wish for more The Master!

[personal profile] feverbeats 2010-07-29 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
But Ariaaaaaa, what about the rest of Inception? Like, the plot stuff? Can we talk about how it DOESN'T HOLD UP and NONE OF IT WORKS and there should be fic that makes sense of it?

[personal profile] feverbeats 2010-07-29 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I am going to write problem at least one Cobb/Mal thing! :D :D

Huh! Well . . . I think it's very interesting, but I also think it's kind of bullshit. I mean, I don't think Nolan intended it to be an easter egg that would people would see and work out, exactly. And I don't think it was his totem, that's bullshit. I think possibly it was there to confirm that the ending was reality, if people wanted to see that. NOT THAT IT MATTERS, as the ending was clearly NOT reality. Nolan obviously thought it was open-ended, but really either way is so wildly full of holes that it makes no sense.

[personal profile] feverbeats 2010-07-29 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
My sister had a smart thought! The ring could totally be read as Cobb's having gotten over Mal, even in the dream.

P.S. I will fight you to the death re: women issues in the movie. Mal is the only character who's interesting or fleshed-out at all.

[personal profile] feverbeats 2010-07-29 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
*nodnod!*

But she doesn't function as such for 90% of the film. Nearly all of it is dreams in which she's alive and flashbacks in which she's alive. It's not the same as a dead female character we never meet or see.

[personal profile] feverbeats 2010-07-29 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha, Becca and I have been agreeing on everything lately, too! IT'S REALLY WEIRD. Maybe I have become more agreeable! (UNPOSSIBLE.)

I have been waffling on watching the new Holmes, but you have convinced me.

I want Elizabeth back too! I have to remember to watch the first half of this week's episode before next week.

Ariadne is awesome! I have seen posts saying that she was extraneous, but no, really, without her Cobb is completely screwed (I subscribe to the interpretation that he isn't, fyi) and there is no movie.

I just saw Sherlock myself and OH SO GOOD and also I TOTALLY wish to subscribe to the idea of Benedict Cumberbatch being the Master. (it would be tragic to not have John Simm in the role, but DUDE. BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH. I had never heard of him before today and now I want him in that role SO SO MUCH.)

Also I am glad I am not the only person who read those conversations about being gay in that way. I didn't think anything of them except to think, oh, so adorably awkward they are, and then I went and looked around and apparently people were upset? *sigh*

IT WOULD BE HARD TO IMAGINE ANYTHING MORE AWESOME.

Yes, this is true! It is frustrating to have gayness dismissed as a joke. But as you say, I did not read the scene that way. But if it DOES turn out to be that, over the course of the next episodes? I WILL BE SO ANGRY. *crosses fingers* (IF IT ACTUALLY BECAME TEXTUAL GAYNESS, THEN THAT WOULD BE MORE AWESOME THAN JOHN SIMM REGENERATING INTO BENDICT CUMBERBATCH. I THINK I WOULD ACTUALLY EXPLODE FROM THE AWESOME. Unfortunately the showrunner comments do not seem to support that reading...)

DUDE. I spent much of Sherlock imagining how Cumberbatch would've been as Eleven (though I love Matt Smith); I had not considered him as the Master. OMG. NOW IT WILL NOT GO AWAY.

We need more El on White Collar, I totally agree. Though I'm amused by all the neck-up shots, hahaha.

Wait, he was nearly cast as Eleven? I hadn't heard that (I just think he would've been cool).

I gather Cumberbatch turned down the role of Eleven. As for Masters: I still hold out hope for a lesser-known actor called Me.

Not seen Sherlock yet, but it's gone very close to the top of the List.

'Man who genuinely doesn't give a damn one way or another is startled into asking if something is going on and is relieved to find out that they're both goddamn terrible at this social interaction thing, so maybe they should go solve crime.'

THIS! And though word of god says otherwise, I genuinely er, don't care! I mean it makes me angry that Moffett has had to specifically stand up and say "oh ps, they're not gay!" but like, whatever, fuck authorial intent, I write what I want. I'm pretty sure Conan Doyle didn't write his detective with nicotine patches and a predilection for texting, either.

Not gonna lie, I half watched this because UM HOLMES YES and half because I needed to watch someone named Benedict Cumberbatch act.

And the Master idea is SUCH YES! He would be a great physical contrast for Matt Smith as well.

(I just saw Inception for the second time (in IMAX yesssss) and fff I find new things to think about every time someone brings this movie up. I love it so.)
