mjolnir is not constructive

File under: good reference conversations for the stupid epic Avengers fic I'm writing; also file under reasons I need to have a billion fannish gchats with [personal profile] were_duck.

were_duck: I have complicated feelings about how Loki thinks he needs to be a dominant but that role is just WRONG for him so he ends up bratting and acting out and he's so DAMAGED he can't accept a reasonably healthy relationship with Thor, who ALSO had to figure a lot of things out and finally might almost be ready to be what Loki needs, and Loki is even more confused because he's such a sadist, and sadists are supposed to be rulers, right? and he's full of self-loathing that he projects onto humans
aria: ahhh I am figuratively shrieking and running in circles now
aria: because I have a couple of friends who are hugely in favor of dom!Loki and I just have such a kneejerk "NO" to that and you have just articulated why!
were_duck: yeah, lol!no
were_duck: his wanting to be a dom is like, his entire PROBLEM.
were_duck: that's how he gets into shitty situations like terrible attempts to take over the universe.
were_duck: and he's so viciously repressed about it
were_duck: that's why he so sexist and speciesist and just plain EVIL
were_duck: he doesn't know how to channel his feelings appropriately!
aria: yes yes yes
aria: and Thor could probably help! if Loki just stopped for like five minutes so Thor could do something more constructive than knock him around mid-epic-battle
were_duck: well, Thor was TRYING to TELL him that on the mountain before he was so rudely interrupted by Iron Man
aria: RIGHT?
aria: that was in fact the closest Loki got to listening!
aria: and then BAM, IRON MAN
were_duck: yup!
were_duck: and I mean. Look how meek Loki was at the end, all gagged.
were_duck: and just. relaxed.
aria: sdklsdkfdjfd
aria: I was like IS THIS HAPPENING
aria: obviously they should've just tied him up and gagged him AGES ago
were_duck: I KNOW

YES. I mean, I enjoy Loki a lot more when he is being an awful little shit in Avengers than when he is emoing all over the place in Thor, but the entire reason his attention-seeking world-domination mayhem is compelling is that he is so transparently unfit for it. Well, for world domination I mean, obviously mayhem is his specialty--but one gets the sense that he has been raised as a prince of Asgard who is second in line to rule, and thus feels that (a) ruling is his birthright and his duty, and (b) he has been unfairly deprived of this and screwed over in Thor's favor (in addition to Odin's various other, ahem, unqualified successes at parenting). So he's got a massive chip on his shoulder and is looking for a planet to subjugate, but oh, honey, the insecurity and vulnerability are just rolling off you in waves through that paper-thin veneer of authority.

Not... that I can disapprove of dom!Loki at all, but dom!Loki is hot because of how over-the-top vicious and domineering he gets, and that is pure overcompensation. It's not that he's bad at it--he gets really into it. But it sits so unnaturally on him and his insecurity is so raw and open that the more into it he gets, the more he's actually just begging for someone to come along and deliver righteous smackdown whumpage.

Ha, yes. :D He really did look relaxed and more comfortable in his skin than I've ever seen him by MILES. He looked kind of... radiantly happy, actually. Maybe that's what Nathasha whispered to Clint?

I finally saw Avengers last night! EEEEE!

Also, has it crossed your radar what Marvel is actually doing with Loki and Thor in the comic universe right now? I am delighted by it. Although, um, none of this post would apply, at all.

I always figured that the reason Loki was so awful at ruling was because he was so much better at being a master of chaos. And maybe that's why all of his plans are so terrible, and keep failing. He's not a end-game thinker; he just loves setting up the pieces, knocking them down and delighting in the shitstorm that follows. Which doesn't mesh at all with being groomed as a ruler. He's just got an entirely opposite viewpoint of what it means to be in control, which has nothing to do with the (what should be dull and peaceful) rule and everything to do with instigating mayhem.

As for the dom thing.. I'm not sure I agree on pigeon-holing Loki into any particular role. The one thing you can be sure of is that he'll always take it too far. And that he's vicious and likes freaking people out (the eye-extraction bit? yeah). Essentially, I don't think he knows when, or how to stop, likes not having limits, and will end up terrifying anyone he's with because he'll always be pushing and taking whatever it is too far.

Finally got around to both watching Thor yesterday and seeing the Avengers tonight.

THIS POST IS EVERYTHING I NEEDED. My Thor/Loki feels are off the charts atm, holy shit.
