three fannish things
It is pouring rain, which is not the midwinter snow I always desire but is still comfy sweater weather, and I have painted my nails gold, just cos. Today I think is a day to curl up and talk about fandom things!
i. HOBBIT TRAILER. I love everything about it! I love all the dwarves (distinctive enough that I have tried to resolve to learn which is which by the time the film comes out, although I'm fairly sure that as long as I can keep track of Thorin, Fili, Kili, Balin, and Bombur, I'll have my important bases covered). I love the clear determination to tell the dominoed events that culminate in Lord of the Rings, because that's apparently everything I've ever wanted from an expansion of the Hobbit; WHITE COUNCIL, PLZ. And I love Bilbo so, so much. I loved him more than anything when I was four, and I don't think I've ever managed to stop. This time next year I'm going to be a delighted sobbing mess of Hobbit emotions, I suspect.
ii. Four new Sherlock trailers, while we're on the subject of Martin Freeman In Everything. Despite having felt tetchy with Sherlock ever since Blind Banker was made of fail, I am quite willing to be excited. Mostly because STOPPING IN FRONT OF BUSES and ASKING JOHN TO HIT HIM oh god this is EVERYTHING THAT I WANT from this iteration of Holmes.
iii. End of the year fandom meme!
Your main fandom of the year?
I am naturally polyfannish, but as far as sheer immersive dedication goes, this year's clear winner is Thor. This was also a definite year of Harry Potter revival, in terms of FEELINGS; and, although it's not finished yet, the second-longest fic I've worked on this year is a Harry Potter fic.
Your favorite film you watched this year?
Imagine Me & You! I am somewhat behind the curve here, but shh, I adore it; it's my new stupid comfort film.
Your favorite book read this year?
Jo Walton's Among Others, a book about fandom and all my favorite books and being an awkward teenager. The climax is about pulling magic from Le Guin's Lathe of Heaven and Lord of the Rings and other books less fiercely dear to me, and I teared up all over everything, and I said "YES" aloud more than once, and snuggled the library copy in joy, and it was kind of perfect.
Your favorite tv show of the year?
We have here the world's weirdest three-way tie, between White Collar, Community, and um Supernatural idk I can't help it. Honorable mentions to Doctor Who (which wasn't as good this season as the last, though I still loved it) and Castle, which I picked up for the first time.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Tumblr, actually. I love the AO3 and Dreamwidth and fannish community with intelligent discussions, but I discovered that I also love reblogging graphics of my favorite characters and capslocking about their faaaces.
Also, Dragon*Con. WisCon is much more my speed as far as ability to handle massive crowds goes, but -- WisCon is to Dreamwidth as Dragon*Con is to Tumblr, perhaps? Sometimes it's just wonderful to sit in a row of fangirls staring at Mark Sheppard and inwardly capslocking about his faaaace.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Mm, probably X-Men: First Class. In part it's just because I'm a curmudgeon and disgruntled that fandom at large didn't get on the Erik/Charles boat until they were young and hot, like manipulative old men in best enemy love isn't good enough or something. (My sympathies to anyone who was, say, shipping Three/Delgado for years and wants the Ten/Simm people to get off their lawn.) But it's mostly that an alarming amount of the resultant fic took the idea that Charles Is Right at face value, or didn't even think to deconstruct the stupider aspects of Erik's revenge plot against Shaw, or RAGE BUTTON thought that it's okay to use Erik's Holocaust trauma as the hurt part of an h/c scenario and that it can actually be made better by Charles' healing cock. I HAVE LOTS OF FEELINGS APPARENTLY.
Not that the section of XMFC fandom that addresses all these issues isn't stellar, and not that I didn't bookmark a ton of great fic, because it is and I did.
Your fiction boyfriend of the year?
LOKI. No one is surprised. Honorable mentions to Alan Ryves and Dean fucking Winchester, because apparently this is my year of fictional boyfriends who are great at being codependent brothers.
Your fiction girlfriend of the year?
RIVER FUCKING SONG. Nngh, River. Also Elizabeth Burke. Perhaps my fictional girlfriends theme this year is married ladies who get shit done? Yep.
Your biggest squee moment of the year?
EVERYTHING ABOUT MARK SHEPPARD, oh my goodness. I was a big mess of glowy joy in the shape of a person the entire time I was at his panel and for the rest of the day afterwards. The rest of the week. The rest of the month. He used his amazing Mark Sheppard mind powers to make me watch Supernatural. And rewatch his bits in Firefly and White Collar and Leverage and Doctor Who. MARK SHEPPARD IS MAGIC.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
I am anxiously excited for more White Collar! (Their cliffhangerrrs, it is always so fraught.) I am SO EXCITED FOR AVENGERS I FULLY PLAN TO GO TO A MIDNIGHT SHOWING WITH MY ROOMMATE AND MY RELATIONSHIP PEOPLE AND ANY OTHER FRIENDS WHO WANT TO COME ALONG. Oh yes. And of course I am looking forward immensely to the Hobbit, as should be obvious from my joy over the trailer.
And now LUNCH. Also, I will attempt to not be too amused at everyone's alarm over the latest LJ debacle. Come to the Dreamwidth side, guys, it's nice here and you don't even need an invite code right now.

ETA: Actually, here's a funny conversation that said friend was in:
Someone else: You know, you look a lot like someone in LotR...
Friend, in a resigned tone: Legolas, right? [friend had long blond hair at the time]
Someone else: No, you actually look a lot like Gandalf.
Friend: Ooh, really? That is so cool!
