aria: ([doctor who] out there)

my ten icon is outdated now

I am writing this entry on the other side of a concert and everyone else's reaction posts, so these are not really pure or coherent thoughts, but nevertheless, I saw The Eleventh Hour!

It did not occur to me at the time, because at the time I was too busy beaming all over the place at the amazing renewed joy I'm feeling for this show, but oh Moffat, stop recycling your own plot elements. (Recycle other people's! One of the things I loved is that Moff clearly watched Who as a child in a completely different way than Rusty did, because all his old school bits were completely different. I loved it.)

It did not occur to me to be skeeved at all by the Kiss-o-Gram job Amy had, possibly because I was blinded by joy that she had ready handcuffs with which to restrain the Doctor. Most of the short-lived post-ep discussion I had with the friends with whom I watched went, essentially, "They're going to have lots of kinky sex now, right? Right??" It's not even that I really ship them, though. The Doctor is Amy's imaginary friend! I expect that the pretending she did about him was quite innocent.

I loved that he's been a fact of her life for most of it. I love how brave and willing and absurd she was as a child. I love that she was packed and ready to go. I love that she went to therapy for it, and bit the therapists for saying he wasn't real, and that she apparently told the whole village about the Raggedy Doctor; I love that Amy ... isn't your typical narrative 'in', I guess. I mean, she is in the sense that I think we're meant to latch onto young Amelia Pond, but from there she becomes quite odd and like she might go in interesting directions. And I love that she goes with him, even though she's still kind of angry with him, even though he's probably responsible for making her abandonment issues worse, even though she's about to get married and she has to know that it's amazingly unlikely he'll actually drop her back off on the right day, because -- your imaginary friend from your childhood shows up, of course you're going.

As far as Eleven himself goes, I think about two thirds of the way through the episode I said "I LOVE HIM," so I guess the verdict is in. Especially early on, I kept seeing Ten, but by the end I wasn't anymore, so as a progression of Eleven becoming himself, I actually liked it. (I also liked the complete destruction of Ten's outfit! It was tasty and symbolically fitting the same way that BURNING THE TARDIS was.) So far all I can tell for certain is that Eleven makes physical messes wherever he goes, still babbles but a bit less than Ten did, and has, as far as I can tell, completely rejected the quiet depths of pain that both Nine and Ten held onto. What I got from him was mostly this overwhelming sense of joy at being new, like he was trying his cheerful best not to bring his Ten/Time War/what-have-you baggage with him. I'm not-so-secretly hoping this means he's going to be really terrifying. Um yes.

I think the TARDIS will take some getting used to! I love that he called her sexy -- Doctor/TARDIS OTP? -- and I am hoping very much that we get to see, say, the swimming pool and the library. It seems a bit ... crowded, in a very oldschool way; let's cram One's clutter into Five's plastic and round it off with the Shalka staircase! So when I say "will take some getting used to" I mean it in the best possible way.

Possibly everyone observed this, but I love that Eleven stole his clothing from a hospital locker room. Three and Eight both did that! What a weird recurring habit to have, Doctor. I haven't decided quite who Eleven reminds me of, because I think I have to see more, but he was Definitely The Doctor. There was never a point I was unclear on that.

My single favourite part was when that giant eyeball thing did a flashing sequence of all the old Doctors, and Eleven stepped right through Ten's face. There was much joyful flailing on my part, and I don't even know why.

I am too tired now to care about the credit sequence (wtf!) or to talk about the stuff I am looking forward to from the preview, but sdld;sfkjfddsf I HAVE SO MUCH DOCTOR WHO JOY. I LOVE HAVING DOCTOR WHO JOY.

He seems like he's found an inner peace about it, but it strikes me as more the inner peace you THINK you've reached the moment you decide you're going to try and let go. If that makes sense.

i agree with pretty much everything you said here! i would also like to add that i love that eleven is a team player from the get-go, because nine was really not and ten definitely had a tendency to go lone saviour at times -- really only a team player, when he was, because everybody on his team was SO BADASS THEY COULD NOT BE DENIED.

speaking of badass, AMELIA POND! all my misgivings about the relative youth of this team are, for now at least, quite soothed and largely overwhelmed with GLEE. though ah, i couldn't really help getting distracted by the seams on amy's stocking whenever i had the opportunity. because shallow mel is shallow.

also, you know, it's good to know we're already rolling on another dubious prophecy. thanks, prisoner zero.

OH my god, I was grinning like mad the entire way through this episode. Tiny Amy was fantastic, and I love what having the Doctor as a childhood friend does to you; I can't wait to see more of them. Basically I agree with everything here! The rooftop scene made me flail like a mad thing for all kinds of different reasons. Can there be more now?

In conclusion I need to get an Eleven icon as soon as possible.

I'm not-so-secretly hoping this means he's going to be really terrifying.

I... think you might get that wish. Judging by the promo.

GNAAAH I KNOW I KNOW I LOVED THAT PART TOO

I think it was just the absolutely gorgeous imagery of him emerging from all the previous doctors, like he was the logical product of all those past experiences. It's Moffat's way of having Eleven own who he has been, what he's done, and what he's been through, right from the start. Giving the Eleventh Doctor the weight of legitimacy that all the previous doctors had. It could have been clumsy and heavy-handed, but it was just so beautiful, it worked so well.
