pleasing everyone isn't like you

I decided it was worth skipping through all the self-congratulatory bits and the parts where they talk about robots and monsters and explosions in order to find discussion of the last fifteen minutes in Doctor Who Confidential.

Before anything else, I want to note that in the light of the next day, the scariest thing the Doctor says isn't the bit about being the Time Lord victorious. It isn't "The laws of Time are mine, and they will obey me." It isn't anything that sounds like the Master. No, it's the bit where he's standing in the snow all pleased with himself, three traumatized humans staring at him, and he asks blithely, "Isn't anyone going to thank me?"

Because that -- that explains a whole world of motivations, and none of them are any good.

Anyway, quotey bits from the Confidential:

RTD: He's in a very, very dangerous path there, as he steps out of the TARDIS, because he's becoming omnipotent, and that's not good. That's how I imagine someone like the Master became the Master, was by taking all the power a Time Lord has and using it and exaggerating it until there's no going back.

TENNANT: And where that might lead is almost impossible to quantify. I mean, if he's willing to do this, then what's to stop him going back into the Time War? What's to stop him going back and filling Donna's mind again, what's to stop him from going back and making sure Rose never goes into the alternative universe? There's so many things open to him now. He's literally ripping time apart.

dsl;fdskjdsf I CAN'T EVEN. Most of me thinks they're not actually going to go there, because RTD's definition of "Pull out all the stops" tends in a more "Huge explosions! Deus ex machina!!" direction than a "Let's think of scary implications and then go there" direction, but -- but guys. It is SPOILER REVIEW TIME. Spoiler one, as per the Christmas trailer: Donna's back. Spoiler two, as per news articles months ago with set photos, flashback!Rose is there. Spoiler three: leaked set photos and IMDb both say Timothy Dalton in Time Lord robes. I think the prevailing theory last time I paid any attention to fandom, back in ... March ... was that as Ten is dying he has strange hallucinatory flashbacks, including the Master. It doesn't look like this is the case, honestly, but now I am starting to have this hope -- this hope that is probably going to be dashed! -- that the Doctor's actually asking himself those things Tennant brings up. What's to stop him from messing with Donna again? -- Donna's definitely in this next one. What's to stop him from fucking Rose's timeline royally? -- set pictures show us s1-era Rose and Jackie! What's to stop him going back to the Time War? -- WE HAVE DALTON IN HIGH COUNCIL ROBES. I just. Holy fuck the places this could go.

I'm not going to actually write this, in the vague hope that they'll actually be amazing and go through with it. (Although obviously if they don't I will have to write it! NO DON'T QUOTE ME ON THIS. I don't care if I've been hit really hard with the bat of fannish enthusiasm; I don't have the damn time and anyway after Christmas I'll need to work on my due South big bang. Really.)

What I am going to write, though, is something less along the line of Tennant's quote and more along the line of RTD's. Taking all the power a Time Lord has and using it and exaggerating it until there's no going back. fjksdkdfs guh. I need to write this yesterday.

It also occurs to me that I have so much I want to write that eventually my head is going to explode. This will not do, so I decided that instead of writing the billion WIPs I had, I would mash them all together into a tiny ficlet, RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW.
One day the Doctor took the TARDIS to Eastwick, where he had tea with Darryl. Darryl persuaded the Doctor that it was perfectly justifiable and right to use his Time Lord powers absolutely, whereupon the Master turned up and Darryl watched in satisfaction while the Doctor and the Master proceeded to take over the universe. Of course at the last moment Fraser turned up and used his powers of Goodness and Reason to get the Doctor to see the light, thereby saving the universe. Meanwhile Ray Kowalski thought the entire thing was ridiculous, so he joined the Stargate program and had lots of puddlejumper sex with John Sheppard.

The end.

OH GOD, YES.

Basically I agree with everything in this post. Also that story at the end is sheer genius.

THUMBS UP

I realized part of the reason I liked that episode so much is that I just love speech-making... I would write little speeches like the Doctor kept giving ENDLESSLY if I were allowed.

... ... ...

... now I really really really want you to write Darryl/Paul Gross as the Master. EVEN THOUGH MY BRAIN WOULD PROBABLY GO COMPLETELY OFFLINE DURING/AFTER READING IT.

[i would write it myself except yeah, BRAIN EXPLODAGE.]
