I want your love and I want your revenge

In ... 2007? but mostly in 2008, I was really, really into Doctor/Master. It hit pretty much every single one of my (some of them previously undiscovered) buttons: they were best friends when they were young, who eventually had a massive falling-out due to dramatic difference in worldview; all grown up, now one of them saves the universe but mostly Earth while sometimes being suspiciously messianic, and the other concocts increasingly ridiculous schemes, ostensibly to rule/destroy the world but mostly to get his ex-boyfriend's attention; together, they don't so much fight crime as distract each other sufficiently to keep the world from ending. Oh, and they're aliens, and routinely break the laws of physics. And the best part is that I didn't find myself with just a few precious shippy episodes: no, these guys had an excess of forty freaking years of history and canon and debatable canon and general absurdity.

Perhaps you can see where I'm going with this.

I'm being good and finishing my work and packing and generally doing all those pre-travel things one must do, but I'm starting to run out of Smallville episodes with promising summaries, and it's not like all the other clips of the Bad Romance vid didn't look just as ridiculously shippy. I'm frankly bewildered. I've always been pretty good at avoiding the sucking vortex of comics, and I'm mostly conversant in Marvel anyway (although not for lack of trying; I love you, Batman friends). So I am not quite sure what the hell I am doing! All I know is that none of the other DCU continuity has Chloe, and yet this probably won't be enough to stop me from really, really ill-advised forays into the abyss in search of more good Lex material.

...Speaking of Doctor/Master, which I wasn't really, there are now a bunch of cryptic teasers for s6 Doctor Who floating around the internets. I have no particular insights, except that most of it sounds hugely awesome, and also I am, as per usual, crossing my fingers for more Master, whether he's Benedict Best-Name-Ever Cumberbatch or not.

I warn you, a lot of the Superman comics are Really Dumb.

BUT NOT LEX LUTHOR: MAN OF STEEL. THAT'S GREAT.

[personal profile] feverbeats 2010-10-09 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHA. Yeah basically. I don't know, mostly I am massively bored by Superman comics, and a lot of it is cardboard cut-out villainy from Lex, but you are not me, obvs., and you may not find it boring!

NOT ALL THE BEST BITS. In fact, there are some really amazing bits that aren't in there! Including some Lex/Bruce stuff. But yes, all the bits with the gorgeous metallic-looking art are from that. (Warn you: there is a love story for Lex in it. But it's creepy as fuck and I kind of enjoy it in parts.)

[personal profile] feverbeats 2010-10-09 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
AHAHA. Well, in that case . . . :D

OKAY GOOD.

The amount of thought I have given to Ainley!Master's motivations is truly staggering. I've decided in some ways he's crazier than Simm!Master.

Superman:Red Son is good stuff. Although since the premise is Kal El is raised in Soviet Russia, there is no childhood friendship with Lex. Still, excellent stuff between them.

The husband, who knows comics better than I, says 52 also has good Lex stuff.

Collective farmboy, oh yes. Lex is the symbol of America, heh.

[personal profile] feverbeats 2010-10-09 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, oh god, I still haven't check out Red Son. I keep meaning to.

UGH BUT I HATE 52. :( :( It's probably got good Lex stuff, though. I just hate that it's about the point at which the DCU began its downward spiral. You know, one of them.

I dunno, man. He says he liked that the villains and second string heroes got stuff to do.

I actually think I might cry if they get someone else :( I've got my heart set.

I thought (read on io9, I think) only two of those teasers were actual things that would happen in s6, and the rest were made up out of whole cloth? Would love a fandom poll on which ones people think are real and which are fake, actually.

I knew I wasn't making it up! Except the part where only two of them are real. Some of them are real.

Seconding the rec for Lex Luthor: Man of Steel, which really is fantastic. One of the best examinations of Lex ever.

You should also check out the animated feature Superman: Doomsday, several clips of which are in "Bad Romance." It's a great story in general, and the Clex-y bits are really...um. Lex, could you TRY for a little subtlety?

Can I just say how thrilled I am that you're getting into this pairing? I'm trying not to be a creepy fandom stalker person, but I adore all your Due South and Doctor Who stuff, and watching "Bad Romance" five million times left me flailing with Smallville nostalgia, with no one to share it with.

I need to find the complete version of Superman: Doomsday RIGHT NOW.

I think you can stream it on Netflix. I know they've got it to rent, anyway. Or I'm sure someone somewhere has it to download. But...yeah. Between that and the red roses on Superman's grave, I think Lex has just gone fuck it, subtlety is for lesser mortals.

It's always fun when creators seem to be slashing characters just as energetically as the fangirls. Back in the day, everyone in Smallville fandom seemed to find out about Lex and Clark having a canonical love child around the same time and it was the OMGWTFsquee! heard round the world.

Mind if I friend/subscribe? I figure between Clex, Doctor/Master, Fraser/Kowalski, and Kara/Leoben, that is just too many ships to share and not be friends.

I started to write this before I saw the other comics, but I see that people have already recced Red Son. I am going to sit down this weekend and write up my Smallville recs for you (I thought I had them, but they're buried somewhere in the depths of my old school email account)
---
Um, ok, the best superman comic ever is Red Son, which is this AU where the space ship landed in Russia instead of Kansas, in the 1930s, and Superman becomes a Great Soviet Hero. And Lex comes up with all of his elaborate schemes from the history of Superman comics... to save America from the Alien Soviet threat.

Wow, how did I manage to post the previous comment without using my Red Son icon? Batman!

Question: Do you have any interest in other DCU fic? Te's batfamily stuff is awesome. And there's also a lot of Lex/Clark/Bruce combos in my favorites. Also Robin/Superboy.

Aaah I have been sucked down into the void that is awesome Smallville fic I haven't read since 2004 aaaaahhhhh. I am kind of hating you right now. But also kind of loving you.

But will I get through this without re-reading every story? Unclear.

Just for the record: Chloe is about to show up in mainstream DCU canon for the first time! (A serial about Jimmy Olsen.) also, I love your Chloe love, because she's basically why I used to watch that show (lo, these many moons ago).

The place you should start for DC-related, rather than SV-related, fic is the DC Fic Index memories, although as far as I know it is no longer being updated. However, it does organise a lot of classics, though fair warning, most DC fic is Bats/Supes (known as "World's Finest") rather than Clex. Also, Reconcilable Differences, which I'm sure you've already read but anyway, is the Smallville-to-DCU Gateway Drug of Choice for most people (It's Tim/Kon and Clex. You know who Kon and Tim are, right? I feel like everyone knows this by osmosis but just in case, Kon is the infamous test-tube biological baby of Clark and Lex whose not-that-secret identity is Superboy, and Tim was World's Creepiest Robin when the story was written but is now Red Robin, which is a really stupid identity he borrowed off Jason Todd.)

The other thing is that it feels like to me, with the exception of Te's work, DCU fandom is pretty segregated into likes-the-adults and likes-the-teens. I am a likes-the-teens so I have nothing much to say about the adults. But soooo much identity porn, Aria. So much.

Ooooh. Those teasers are very interesting. Now I'm all curious about which ones are real and which aren't.
