woke up broke free drove a long time
I am back from WisCon! My flights were lovely and on time and other good things. (Traveling through O'Hare? was awesome when I was a tiny child and liked the moving walkway with all the lights; was painfully annoying as a teenager when I had to navigate the airport myself and discovered that Chicago can sometimes be a black hole of delays; is now awesome again because I can entertain myself during takeoff and landing critically scanning the suburbs for a suitable house for Fraser and the Rays. Hey, how do you entertain yourself on airplanes?) If I start thinking about Prop 8 I will probably end up crying into my pillow while listening to Vienna Teng's City Hall, so instead I am gritting my teeth and trying not to hate all systems of justice and government and instead loving Iowa from afar.
Some orders of business:
i. I got a new glasses prescription, although not new frames, and I can now SEE!, but since I can SEE! I in fact have to sit with my laptop perched on the very edge of my knees so I don't go cross-eyed before I adjust. I also got my hair cut, because the Southern summer has descended with appropriate swampiness and also just because I like having short hair. I know, pics or it didn't happen, but [a] I didn't take a 'before' picture because my camera's out of batteries, and [b] if you really need to see what I look like with a few inches chopped off, wait for a locked post, kiddos.
ii. Along with some new clothes and a general sense of thinky well-being, I have brought home from WisCon plotbunnies and motivation. So here is a WIP list! It is a special WIP list, though, because it is [a] interactive! and [b] not a list of Things Wot I Have Unfinished On My Computer, but rather a somewhat shorter list of Things Wot I Actually Intend To Finish Writing This Summer.
01. The Dark Is Rising; No Second Coming
I specifically want to finish this fic by roughly the last week of June, because it is a fic about Midsummer (among other things). I wrote thirty pages of my complex frustrations with the end of Silver on the Tree, and then I ground to a halt because the plot needed to happen. All I really need to do is reread one of the books -- preferably The Dark Is Rising -- to make sure I still have the style and the specific weirdness of the magic of the Light down, and I should be able to do this one.
In brief: Barney the artist! Will/Bran! Simon getting married! Jane and the Lady! A sixth Dark Is Rising novella, complete with a Merriman cameo, Welsh sheepdogs, and possibly Camelot! It's really cool, I promise.
02. Doctor Who; The Care and Feeding of Your Atomic Bomb
I am probably lying about writing this one over the summer, because I have basically zero motivation to write Whofic, and "Goddammit, guys, I hate your stupid shipwars and I love both Rose and Martha" is probably a bad genesis for a fic when I'm busy avoiding the stupid shipwars anyway. "I want to write a fic with the title The Care and Feeding of Your Atomic Bomb because it sounds awesome" is equally bad. However, um, I really do want to write a fic with that title, and moreover I have this tendency to forget that I love writing Martha, and then I write Martha and become enthusiastic all over again. I may have the necessary motivation for it!
In brief: Martha falls through the Rift into Pete's World and ends up working at Rose's Torchwood. Steampunk! Alien invasions! Martha/Rose! Maybe human!Doctor can come too but I haven't decided yet.
03. due South; Burning Down the House
Okay. Okay I am so excited for this one that I can hardly type for sheer joy. I cannot write it until I have rewatched all of due South -- this goes for all the dS stories -- and I'm also going to have a really difficult time writing it. I don't know how technically good I am at writing unhappy stories, but I'm emotionally terrible at it because I have to write them in tiny bits or they eat my brain and I become quietly and willingly miserable. So for my own sanity this one has to be slow going, and will probably be written in parallel to some other happier dS fic.
In brief: Benton Fraser is actually literally insane. I don't want to give away anything, not least because I haven't quite figured out how I want to tell this damn story, but I can quickly type out what will probably have to be the header warnings, which are that it will be really awful whether you ship Fraser/Vecchio or Fraser/Kowalski, and it is also deathfic, and ... I am probably not pitching this well unless you thrive on due South stories that are intent on destroying your soul, but it will be AWESOME, okay.
04. due South; Detective Vecchio's Memos to Self
This is probably one of those cheerful things I will be writing to combat the fic above!
In brief: Vecchio left Kowalski helpful undercover notes that turn out to be bewilderingly unhelpful in navigating the world of what the hell Ray is supposed to do about the complicated UST in this partership thing. Mostly I just want to write a kind of half-dialogue between Vecchio and Kowalski, and also I secretly suspect that one does not get real dS writing cred until one has written a fic where Fraser and Kowalski have sex and actively Do Not Talk About It.
05. due South; The Windhover
This is another one of those fics I am looking forward to enough that I am having trouble typing. I could probably write it before finishing my rewatch, and in fact that might be a good idea because I still have Victoria fresh in my mind, but I can always watch Victoria again! (Haha, I can always watch Victoria again whilst writing the crazy!Fraser fic. Oh what a bad plan.)
In brief: Victoria comes back to Chicago and discovers to her great interest that Ray Vecchio is in fact another guy entirely; what convenient blackmail. Heists! Panicked Fraser! Kowalski being in the extremely weird position of being able to relate emotionally to both Fraser and Victoria and trying very hard to keep his brain from exploding! Eventual Fraser/Kowalski but possibly with some more Fraser/Victoria first because I'm a terrible person! This is another one that is capslock AWESOME, you see.
06. due South; untitled s2 AU
This one requires a title! It also requires me to rewatch The Promise yet again in great depth, and very definitely to have the entire rewatch completed.
In brief: Kowalski turns up mid-s2, much to Fraser's happiness and Vecchio's vague horror and Kowalski's bewilderment. Strategic use of The Promise, Juliet is Bleeding, Some Like It Red, and possibly a few others that have not occurred to me yet! Plenty of Stella! Your humble narrator cruelly taking advantage of Louis' death for her own ends! Eventual OT3 because obviously that's where this one was going!
07. Tintin; untitled
This is
feverbeats' steadily-more-belated birthday fic. I'd better finish it before next February or he will probably come kill me out of sheer frustration.
In brief: TINTIN FIC, guys, what more do you want! No, but: Haddock's alcoholism, Tintin's tendency to manipulate it, Calculus' miracle cure! Tintin's past with Chang! Haddock's terror of women! Tintin's really strange dreams! And no breaking of the fourth wall, but definitely some knocking against it.
Besides this I have a number of other due South fics, a crossover with BSG, a tale of Oliver's Romeo and Juliet, a Buffy fic, a Good Omens fic, and a few more things I am interested enough in that I will want to try writing them, but these seven are the ones I Really Want To Finish Soon.
Anyway, the interactive part is the part where, possibly just to keep my brain from collapsing under the indecision, but also because I am curious, which ones are all of you interested in?
iii. due South rewatch probably to resume ... in the next few days? Real life is suddenly happening, but that should not deter me overmuch.

And I do really, really want to see how "No Second Coming" ends. :D
Are you around tomorrow?
no subject
And uh I have no idea if I'll be around tomorrow! I know I'm getting lunch with my dad and running some errands, so you can give me a ping but I have no guarentees.
ETA: PS I see that you are not in favor of crazy!Fraser. WAY TO NOT ENABLE ME.
no subject
I'll probably be around later in the afternoon and in the evening; I'll give you a ping. I've some ideas for things we could write to get back into the swing of things.
no subject
Afternoon/evening sounds good. :D
And I think editing is a paid feature? But yes, I think you are right about wanting to avoid the crazy!Fraser fic. Among other things it might destroy your ability to ever enjoy CotW, and I want you to be able to do that. XD
no subject
Yeeeeeeah. Very occasionally, you write things that are just not my cup of tea. But that is okay! I will cheerlead from the sidelines just as long as I don't have to know any details. *g*
no subject
And um yes. Especially since it will probably be thirty pages or so of systematically breaking Fraser, I think you are very much within your rights and sanity to avoid it.
no subject
IS IT GOING TO BE LIKE THAT ONE WHERE THE END OF COTW IS A STORY FRASER MADE UP TO MAKE HIMSELF FEEL BETTER ABOUT HIS FUCK-UPS? I already was going to read this one with comfort fic open in MANY TABS, but now I might have to scale it to include only fluffy established-relationship fic with babyhugging. :( :( :(

But yes. Puppies! Babies! Happily-ever-afters! Have those things on hand! But I doubt this fic will come into being on the internets for at least a month or so.
no subject
(How does one edit on Dreamwidth? Is that not a capability I have?)
no subject
But you should write the other ones, too! I think it's fair for you to backbench the Rose/Martha for a while (although I am excited about that one, also), but I really want that damn Dark Is Rising story.
no subject
I am also, by the way, living in quiet fear of the point at which the crazy!Fraser fic is going to take over my brain for as long as it takes to get done. Because it will.
If I start hallucinating Kowalski I will blame it on you. Although I might not be unhappy about it.no subject
You know, the actually frightening part of this is that I am totally willing to enable crazy!Fraser taking over your brain. I am really hoping that does not make me Vecchio in this situation.
no subject
It so totally makes you Vecchio in this situation. Oh honey. <3

Also, I found that Five/Master story I was telling you about, but just realized I don't have your email... can you email me & let me know where to send it? You have my work email, or you can always get ahold of me at my username at yahoo dot com.
no subject
The email I check regularly for fannish things is ariastar at gmail, so that's the place to send it.

...
hah, and then I scrolled back through your post, and read your fic descriptions, and YES! YES TO ALL OF THE ABOVE! ... so I am not that helpful, but I am a CHEERLEADER! *\o/*
no subject
I would also read the Dark Is Rising one, and the Tintin one.
Basically, yay for your WIP:s!
