an attempt at happy things
This morning Hugh Dillon rescued me from a particularly inane anxiety dream. I had been vaguely questioning the wisdom of changing my iPod alarm to the Headstones on shuffle, but it was in fact a brilliant idea. Mm.
I'm becoming increasingly creative in my attempts to battle the habitual if mild summer depression (see: actually thinking it's a good idea to wake up to Headstones music); creating a steady output of fic is the normal method, and works fairly well, but sometimes a little extra is needed. So today I have a variant on the genus of meme that suggests "post ten pictures of women you find attractive/five celebrities you would sleep with/&c" and my variant is "twelve people on TV who make me starry-eyed or happy for whatever reason." Because happy things are good!

1. Katharine Hepburn
My crush on Katharine Hepburn started in ... seventh grade, maybe? when I drew her name at random out of a hat in order to practice writing biographical essays for English class. I had not the faintest clue who she was, but I had kind of a blast finding out and also ended up renting, I think, Bringing Up Baby. I then promptly forgot about her until the age of seventeen or so, at which point
nextian discovered that I'd only seen one Katharine Hepburn film and I was immediately educated in the ways of things like The Philadelphia Story and The Lion In Winter, whereupon I discovered that yes, I had a massive crush on Kate and had since some years previous. She is classy and ballsy and hilarious and has possibly the most distinctively attractive voice in the universe, and if I ever found myself thrown back into the '30s or so, I would run not walk to make an attempt at seducing her. Assuming that wouldn't rip a hole in the fabric of spacetime, of course.

2. Eliza Dushku
While my love for Eliza Dushku is somewhat faded -- I'm kind of burned out for anything Joss Whedon-related at the moment -- I do still remember the moment of "oh damn she is ridiculously attractive" when Faith first sauntered onto Buffy. It's her s3 jeans. And her hair. And I feel a little sad about having much less to say about Eliza Dushku than about Katharine Hepburn, but both of them share the quality of being so smoking hot that I was really gay for them before I'd actually noticed that I was into women.

3. Lee Pace
...Who is not a woman, although the time he's dressed as one for the majority of Soldier's Girl, he makes a pretty hot woman also. I really don't know much about Lee Pace except that he makes me grin like a total goof. I love him in Pushing Daisies but I love him in Wonderfalls, to which poor
bakatulip can attest; we watched it together and whenever Lee Pace appeared on screen I kind of dissolved into pillow-clutching squeaky joy. He just carries this aura of affable wry comfort around with him, and I love it.

4. Tracie Thoms
Look at her! I don't know if I'm ever going to really get over the sheer glowing gorgeousness of Tracie Thoms. I think I first saw her in Rent, very slightly after I'd noticed that I was into women, and spent most of the film wondering wistfully why I couldn't date her, since it seemed like Maureen didn't appreciate her properly and oh man did I ever appreciate her. The real overflow of love, though, comes from also seeing her in Wonderfalls, playing someone completely different to Joanne, and loving her just as much even though the quite attractive neurotic togetherness had disappeared. I may have started gibbering with uncontrollable delight when she and Lee Pace had makeouts.

5. Michaela Conlin
I know pretty much next to nothing about Michaela Conlin, having only seen her in Bones; I have crushes on pretty much the entire cast, seeing as they're all pretty and snarky and lovable, but my crush on Angela is far and away the most epic. I love the sheer pragmatic confidence she exudes. And really, just look at her! That thousand-watt smile, it melts me.

6. David Tennant
Actually I think this picture kind of speaks for itself; he's drinking tea in a closet. I really do adore him; he's all freckly, he finds excuses to stick things in his mouth regardless of what role he's playing (this can become alarming in different ways depending on whether he's the Doctor or Casanova; fortunately Carlisle mostly sticks to chewing on pens), his actual accent which he is not allowed to use anything like often enough is lovely, and, oh yes, he's a giant nerd. I honestly would love to go out for lunch with him and have long debates about which old school Doctor is the best and whether he ships the Doctor with any companions and if he has any burninated Two on tape. Because I am also a giant nerd.

7. Freema Agyeman
And do you know who else is a giant nerd? Miss Freema Agyeman. I am not sure whether I could have debates with her about which old school Doctor is best, since I do not think I've ever heard whether she's seen the old stuff, but I do know that she seems like an extremely lovely person and one with whom it would be fun to hang out. She's also pretty much the definition of adorkable. And it was very difficult to decide what picture of her to use, because she's really stunningly pretty all the time; this one, however, makes me more or less unable to breathe. Oh Freema. <3

8. John Simm
This is probably the nicest picture of John Simm I could've found; he has this habit of doing that intense-stare-at-the-camera thing. But I like the happy on his face here, because deep down I really enjoy it when I find him huggable. John Simm is one of those magical people who looks so stunningly ordinary as to be almost completely forgettable (and absolutely impossible to draw) but my god the man can act. I think I fell in love with him in Life On Mars -- did you know, I think he cries pretty much every single episode, but he justifies it so damn well that I didn't even notice until it was pointed out to me -- and I first found him wildly attractive in, oh, The Sound of Drums. Because nothing says "sexy" like decimating the population. I really don't know, but I do find him pretty much unutterably awesome.

9. Katee Sackhoff
While I do go back and forth on how much I like Kara Thrace depending on the season and who's writing her at the time, I do always find her kind of breathtakingly attractive. (Witness my sorrow at the fact that nearly all of her good sexual tension was with the men on this show; in a world with ostensibly no gender roles, I would like me some awesome Kara-related lesbianism, please.) I've seen and read the occasional interview with Katee Sackhoff in the context of the show, and everything I've seen and heard I've really, really liked. Possibly this was cemented by her assertions that she thought Kara could probably end up with Leoben, but I liked her lots even before she justified my really crazy shipping preferences.

10. Mary McDonnell
Actually this is mostly about my really huge crush on Laura Roslin; I've failed to see Mary McDonnell in anything else ever, which seems quite silly because I'm sure she was also gorgeous when she was younger. I really can't explain what I love so much about her (because flapping my hands expressively and going "LEGS UP TO HERE!" is kind of unhelpful and definitely shallow) but Roslin is just made of so much associative awesome coupled with gorgeousness that I really can't help it.

11. Paul Gross
Oh boy, okay. When hasn't this man made me unrelentingly happy for the past seven-odd months? He's not usually what I think of as My Type physically (in men it's usually the skinny ones with the funny hair -- so, y'know, David Tennant or CKR -- not really the tall dark and handsome ones, so don't even think of asking if I find John Barrowman physically attractive) but for some reason I find him really amazingly pretty. Especially when he's Chris Cutter, which bewilders me since I like both Geoffrey and Fraser much better. I love that he's a good enough actor that I actually have to try very hard to picture Geoffrey and Fraser as being played by the same person; I adore both Geoffrey and Fraser, for wildly different reasons. Pretty much everything Paul Gross does makes me laugh, because he's ridiculous, and I still enjoy it even when I'm kind of hiding behind my hands going "Oh Paul why." And, much like David Tennant in the closet with tea, when I was looking for pictures of Paul Gross I came across a few of him making faces while pretending to help a skull drink from a goblet. I mean, really. He just gives me this big stupid grin all the time.

12. Callum Keith Rennie
Dsfdskkd hands. I mean. Callum Rennie also gives me a big stupid grin, and it really doesn't matter what he's doing; being Ray Kowalski doing anything, being kind of unquantifiably adorable with Hugh Dillon, making out with Katee Sackhoff or Don McKellar or pretty much anyone, having weird experimental hair all the time, ad-libbing funny lines, hanging out in the backs of scenes being eeevil, I really don't care. I do think it's kind of funny that I first really noticed him as Duck in Wilby Wonderful, and then watched all of due South, but didn't actually surrender to really gibbering enthusiasm until Hard Core Logo, because sometimes life's just strange. Anyway, even when he is just hanging out in the backs of scenes being eeeevil, he makes me very happy. <3

I would marry Paul Gross. I actually would. Like, tomorrow. And not just because My Type is based at least 80% on Benton Fraser (although it is; the rest, now that I think about it, is probably CKR).
I cannot think of anyone better to drink tea in a closet with than David Tennant. Bonus YAY! points if there's a kitten involved.
If I could look like any of the women on your list, it would be Eliza Dushku.

I ... am mildly sure I would marry Paul Gross too. I am saved from being one of Those Girls only because Slings & Arrows made me really adore Martha Burns so I mostly just think they're awesome and adorable rather than being jealous in a corner.
David Tennant + kitten = ultimate awesome lunch date, probably.
And if I could look like any of the women on my list, it would probably be Katee Sackhoff, although looking like Eliza Dushku would not be bad at all. :D

And I totally approve of most of your other people. Mmm, so pretty.

If you only approve of most of them, I am in fact very curious to know who you do not approve of!

But my number one person is Kandyse McClure. I mean, look at her! She's gorgeous.

I agree so much with your assessment of Paul Gross; so not my normal type and so often I am hiding behind my hands, but \PG/!!!
And I think I first crushed on Mary McDonnell in 'Dances with Wolves', but Passion Fish cemented it for me. She's the sort of person that makes me happy when she pops up in things.

I really need to see anything else with Mary McDonnell ever. And it's not like there are a lack of good things, either.
this is glaikery being extremely lazy

a) I feel similar about Eliza Dushku! holy that picture of her holy, the end. :P
b) I didn't know Freema cut her hair! Or that she ever had, or, but wow.
c) John Simm's adorable makes me so endlessly happy. (I think the first time I found him REALLY HOT was a few episodes into LoM, but then I went back to TSoD and went "...oh." Basically. He's a very sexy evil in his adorable ordinary-looking acting awesome.)
d) ...umm yeah basically I love the pictures you have chosen, and descriptions and that stuff.
e) that is one of my favorite pictures of DT ever: he is drinking tea in a closet.
Anyway. I think this is a good idea!

Neither did I. Which I find very odd, since I know/heard of/have seen him around (in the fandom sense, not in actually seeing him around) for literally over a decade now, and only seen HCL a few months back. And went a little stupidcrazy. In a nice way, the way that makes for happy. Have seen quite a huge bunch of his work since, too.
Anyway, you ask yourself, who is the person and why are they telling me this? Just because I watched Due South before, and probably some other things, and knew in theory I should be falling in love and did not fall in love until HCL and I'm just glad I'm not the only one. That's all. Have a very nice rest of the day :)
