My Yuletide assignment is PERFECT & BEAUTIFUL. I always get really excited about my Yuletide assignment, but this year I've been specifically asked to write delightful found-family narratives and some characters that I already ship like burning, so this year I am REALLY, REALLY EXCITED.

I just started rereading Cloud Atlas (with the vague plan to perhaps go to the theater, pay for another film starting at the same time, and then sneak into Cloud Atlas instead, because I really want to see it on a big screen, but I feel really squodgy about giving the film money? so a reread seemed in order) but I may throw it over for a thorough canon review of my assigned fandom.

Wait, is Cloud Atlas a movie now? I remember you were actually the one who got me to read that book a couple of years ago. Hmm, it seems like it might be a hard book to film...and why would you feel weird about giving it money?

It is indeed a movie now! And I feel weird about giving it money because, in what seems to have been an effort to give the theme of reincarnation visual representation, they reused a bunch of actors for all the different sections, which ... resulted in apparently a bunch of white actors in yellowface in the Somni~451 section, and also a discourse on the film in which both said white actors and the (white) directors claim that the yellowface isn't problematic. So -- not 100% okay with giving them money! But I do really want to see it, because I have lots of feelings about the book and it looks gorgeous.

Ha! I also feel very squodgy about giving the movie money, yet I'm curious. I mean, I love the novel soooooooooooooooo much, which means I'm invested in a movie version of it. Especially one that looks like what it got right it really did well. It's just that what it did poorly it really fucked up.

I really do think the solution is theater-hopping! Because despite my resolution to revisit the canon for my Yuletide assignment, I've just spent the past few hours sailing through the first Adam Ewing & Robert Frobisher bits, and the strength with which I want to see this rendered on a big gorgeous theater screen is staggering. So if you can manage to be near a theater that's playing something else, which you don't mind giving money, around the same time, and you can get away with entering a different theater room, that may be the way to go. :)
