LOKI. also jack sparrow but whatever.
So I have seen some movies! Specifically, the new Pirates and Thor.
On Stranger Tides: It was all right? I went in expecting ridiculous chase or fight scenes, supernatural shenanigans, gorgeous scenery, and lots of Jack Sparrow, and it certainly delivered on all those counts. But that was really all there was to it. The hunting-the-mermaids section was quite legitimately good, and I enjoyed everything Jack did, but ... mostly it gave me an overwhelming desire to rewatch Curse of the Black Pearl: that has all the ridiculous shenanigans and gorgeousness and roughly the same amount of excellent Jack-and-Barbossa with bonus Zoe Saldana and Jack Davenport and genuinely interesting plot. Ah well. If they make more I'm always up for the Adventures of Jack. Oh, and they didn't kill Barbossa! This is excellent, and relevant to all my interests.
Thor: THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL, by which I mean Asgard. And by Asgard I mean the gorgeous rainbow bridge, and Idris Elba, and Loki's faaaace. I didn't mind any of the bits that took place on Earth, because I am decently fond of Natalie Portman and her Jodi-Foster-in-Contact impression, but Thor's whole arc was veeeery predictable. I kind of cared about him by the end anyway? But really, even though Loki's plan to get his dad to love him was a bit terrible, I would much prefer him over Thor for the succession.
Speaking of, I would have happily watched a whole movie about Odin's family politics, because -- look, give Frigga a bigger role and suddenly you've got basically SUPERPOWERED LION IN WINTER ON THE MOST GORGEOUS SET EVER. (According to the wiki page, incidentally, Tom Hiddleson says he played Loki with an eye to O'Toole's King Henry; I may have melted a little with love here.) I just love Loki a lot, okay. NO ONE IS SURPRISED. I have no idea why anyone in the film is surprised about Loki either, since they could have just read up on their human mythology and realized that Loki is often the baddie. Oh well! He dropped off the edge of the world and now hangs around in reflections in the post-film tag, which was delightful.
I have no idea how coherent any of that was. In conclusion LOKI.

My girlfriend left the movie horrified by everyone's total inability to act in their own self-interest. I left the movie kind of wishing Odin and Loki had access to some sort of adoption counselling -- as with many movies, many terrible things might have been avoided if social workers had been able to intervene.

Hahahaha I KNOW RIGHT. Mind you, Loki was the only one my heart broke for. But I am pretty sure Loki and Thor and Odin could have all worked it out! (Or Loki and Thor could've, at least, since Thor came back relatively sane and intelligent, and I think he and Loki might've gotten on better then. Whereas Odin apparently spent their collective childhood telling them things like "ONLY ONE OF YOU CAN BE KING"; way to go, Allfather. /o\)

ahaha! I totally hadn't thought of it like that. Loki and Thor: Might have done better if raised by wolves.

oh jesus christ, you have given me a wonderful, terrible idea for exactly what kind of Thor fic I want to write.

Yes, Loki was the only one I gave a real crap about. Srsly, if only Odin had just instead kept telling them that tradition said Thor would wear the crown BUT a wise king would do well to name his brilliant brother chancellor and rely on his counsel, or something.

Oh my god seriously. That would've been so easy!

I WILL FIGHT YOU TO DEATH >:( >:( >:(
LOOOOOOOOOOOKI. \o/ I am holding out hope for him as the villain of the Avengers movie, since he's about the only decent villain the Avengers have. Polaris may disagree with me, but don't listen to her.

I knew you would hate that part! <333
I have already come across a maybe-for-reals spoiler that he is in fact going to be the villain in Avengers? PLEASE MAKE IT SO, MOVIE, I WANT ALL THE LOKI FOREVER.
(ps scott is it incorrect in every way to maybe ship loki/thor a little?)

(Also: can we just discuss the obvious Kenneth Branagh self-insert named FANDALL THE DASHING. I find nothing so hilarious as this.)

(AHAHAHA OH MY GOD YES. I hadn't thought of this, but you speak TRUTH.)
