LOKI. also jack sparrow but whatever.

So I have seen some movies! Specifically, the new Pirates and Thor.

On Stranger Tides: It was all right? I went in expecting ridiculous chase or fight scenes, supernatural shenanigans, gorgeous scenery, and lots of Jack Sparrow, and it certainly delivered on all those counts. But that was really all there was to it. The hunting-the-mermaids section was quite legitimately good, and I enjoyed everything Jack did, but ... mostly it gave me an overwhelming desire to rewatch Curse of the Black Pearl: that has all the ridiculous shenanigans and gorgeousness and roughly the same amount of excellent Jack-and-Barbossa with bonus Zoe Saldana and Jack Davenport and genuinely interesting plot. Ah well. If they make more I'm always up for the Adventures of Jack. Oh, and they didn't kill Barbossa! This is excellent, and relevant to all my interests.

Thor: THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL, by which I mean Asgard. And by Asgard I mean the gorgeous rainbow bridge, and Idris Elba, and Loki's faaaace. I didn't mind any of the bits that took place on Earth, because I am decently fond of Natalie Portman and her Jodi-Foster-in-Contact impression, but Thor's whole arc was veeeery predictable. I kind of cared about him by the end anyway? But really, even though Loki's plan to get his dad to love him was a bit terrible, I would much prefer him over Thor for the succession.

Speaking of, I would have happily watched a whole movie about Odin's family politics, because -- look, give Frigga a bigger role and suddenly you've got basically SUPERPOWERED LION IN WINTER ON THE MOST GORGEOUS SET EVER. (According to the wiki page, incidentally, Tom Hiddleson says he played Loki with an eye to O'Toole's King Henry; I may have melted a little with love here.) I just love Loki a lot, okay. NO ONE IS SURPRISED. I have no idea why anyone in the film is surprised about Loki either, since they could have just read up on their human mythology and realized that Loki is often the baddie. Oh well! He dropped off the edge of the world and now hangs around in reflections in the post-film tag, which was delightful.

I have no idea how coherent any of that was. In conclusion LOKI.

I AGREE ABOUT LOKI SO MUCH. He was awesome -- it was pretty clear the writers were more interested in him than in anyone else, and WHO CAN BLAME THEM?

My girlfriend left the movie horrified by everyone's total inability to act in their own self-interest. I left the movie kind of wishing Odin and Loki had access to some sort of adoption counselling -- as with many movies, many terrible things might have been avoided if social workers had been able to intervene.

Whereas Odin apparently spent their collective childhood telling them things like "ONLY ONE OF YOU CAN BE KING"; way to go, Allfather. /o\)

ahaha! I totally hadn't thought of it like that. Loki and Thor: Might have done better if raised by wolves.

oh jesus christ, you have given me a wonderful, terrible idea for exactly what kind of Thor fic I want to write.

I CANNOT EVEN PRETEND TO BE SAD.

[personal profile] feverbeats 2011-05-23 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, okay, hm. Still formulating it, but I think I want some kind of AU in which Thor is stolen by the Frost Giants as a baby and they're raised as brothers there. And let's face it, Laufey is clearly crap at child-rearing, so the boys are probably raised by no one, and possibly by . . . well, Fenrir. Presuming that's what that giant fucking monster was meant to be. (Of course in the real mythology, Fenrir is Loki's child--lol stop giving birth to monsters, guys--but I am ignoring that.) SO. RAISED BY WOLVES.

Well, now I want to read this fic when it's done.

Yes, Loki was the only one I gave a real crap about. Srsly, if only Odin had just instead kept telling them that tradition said Thor would wear the crown BUT a wise king would do well to name his brilliant brother chancellor and rely on his counsel, or something.

Oh man, now that I've told people about it, I'll have to actually finish it. :D

Oh my god seriously. That would've been so easy!

Hey, I'd take that as my Wolf Tales story, since I asked for tricksters! Norse mythology is public domain. Close enough, right? <.

[personal profile] feverbeats 2011-05-23 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah maybe. Since it'd be a direct reversal of something that's only canon in the movie/comics, though, I am unsure whether or not I feel comfortable with that. I'll think about it! (And I can certainly, certainly give you some sort of Loki for your Wolf Tales things.)

LOOOOOOOOOOOKI. \o/ I am holding out hope for him as the villain of the Avengers movie, since he's about the only decent villain the Avengers have. Polaris may disagree with me, but don't listen to her.

is it incorrect in every way to maybe ship loki/thor a little?

I have been looking for Thor fic and, um, this seems to be the pairing of choice. :D?

As well as the kink meme and AO3, there's also [livejournal.com profile] thor_slash -- I've no idea about quality, but there's definitely content. :)

YESSSSSSSSSS. The Avengers don't even fight anyone else, really, except I guess the Hulk.

Ha, that's, that's what the the kink meme is mostly full of (with a profusion of mpreg, sexswap, and woobie!Loki).

I was very pleased that Barbossa not only lived, but got Blackbeard's sword and ship and tore up the letter of marque! Barbossa has always been almost my favorite character.

LOKI IS FASCINATING TO ME. How often do you have a comic book movie villain that... genuinely wants to impress his dad? He doesn't switch sides, he doesn't abandon his adopted family, he doesn't even really hate his brother (so much as he has Jamie Tyrone issues re: his brother). He wants them to love him. And if that means committing genocide against his own people, he'll do it (nevermind that they wouldn't ever actually want that). And the great part is, they want to love him back. They just have crossing ideas of how to love each other (combined with his complete inability to accept that love in the form that it's given). It's a quirky indie family drama in the guise of a movie about superheroes and supervillains. How did zis happen? I NEED ALL THE FIC.

(Also: can we just discuss the obvious Kenneth Branagh self-insert named FANDALL THE DASHING. I find nothing so hilarious as this.)
