a giant leap! or something like that.

Oh my god what. WHAT.

I am not sure I can make this even mildly coherent and organized. Sorry.

I ... go back and forth on whether I like the scope of these episodes. On the one hand, I love that there is scope, that a lot of the adventures we hear about are happening onscreen a little bit -- solving a global alien crisis takes months, not days. On the other hand, I'm a bit worried that Moffat's juggling too much. Maybe I'm trained in my Doctor Who watching to have a horrible sinking feeling when threads are left dangling; I mostly do trust Moffat to pick up all those threads, and to close off answers as he opens up new questions, but I'm still worried, because there's just SO MUCH.

The three major questions, as far as I know, are [1] what are the Silence? [2] what's the deal with the Doctor's death, and [3] what's the deal with the little girl? On the surface we do have the answer to [1] cos we know how the Silence work, why they're a threat, how the Doctor defeated them, &c &c. But it seems deceptively simple! What the hell is the deal with the Silence Will Fall thing? Why the fuck do they have the pseudo-TARDIS from The Lodger? What do they want from the little girl? So presumably this isn't the last of them, which I'm quite happy with, because these are questions that I trust have interesting answers.

This of course ties into [3] which is that presumably the little girl will turn up again. And she is ... Amy's quantum Time Lord daughter? Because Amy is quantum pregnant? And the little girl REGENERATED OMG THAT WAS UNEXPECTEDLY AWESOME? I am tentatively in favor of all this cos it's fascinating. Also, what's with the bit where Amy first finds the little girl's room, and in the door there's a hatch thing and a grown cyborg-esque woman looks out and says "No, I think she's just dreaming"? That was indeed delightful and dreamlike! And makes no sense with everything else! And I'm sure it will by the end. Meanwhile I am anxious about Amy's quantum Time Lord daughter because, well, I don't mind if she's the Doctor's but only if Eleven and Amy and Rory are all okay with that. Which I kind of doubt.

Meanwhile [2], the question of the Doctor's death, is the only thing really bothering me. I mean, I suppose technically older!Doctor sent himself an invitation because he worked out that he'd sent himself an invitation and that's how they all got around to defeating the Silence, and if River worked that out too, she'd be fine going back to Stormcage. And I suppose Amy has come to accept it? And of course Moffat presumably has some way of writing around it and getting to Twelve when it comes time, or even of explaining it beforehand. But that was the only thing that felt really odd to me sans resolution.

Let's see! I have already seen some people being very uncomfortable with the Doctor's solution to the problem of the Silence, but I think it's all right? Presumably if Silence stay out of human sight and human affairs, no one will go around killing them. So he's not condemning them all to death, he's just making them behave. I think this is quite Doctorish, and it is a very ... Ten solution, isn't it, albeit with less begging them to listen first. (I also admit to being charmed by how Eleven finds River shooting things hot, even though he shouldn't. Because it IS hot, goddamn, River Song, be my girlfriend.)

Speaking of, RIVER. I love her habit of jumping off buildings or out airlocks or whatever because she knows the Doctor will catch her! I laughed when she splashed into the swimming pool. Oh, and then I might have screamed a lot and gone "OH MY GOD YES" and other embarrassing fangirl things when the Doctor/River kiss happened. WHEN DID I START SHIPPING THEM LIKE BURNING. And my heart cracked a little when River realized it was probably the last time she'd get to do that. Oh River.

Other things I ship like burning: Amy/Rory! I was so anxious when I, like Rory, wondered if Amy was talking about the Doctor instead. I suppose she could've realized Rory was listening and lied when he asked, but since she spends most of her time begging the Doctor to rescue her, it would make sense for her to also admit to him that it's Rory's stupid face she loves. I kind of love Rory's stupid face too! I love that he still kind of has his Roman self's memories and damages, though only sometimes. And I love that, even when he was afraid that Amy'd just admitted she loved the Doctor more, he sat and talked with the Doctor. Actually, I am pretty much all about the Eleven/River/Amy/Rory Team TARDIS. They are all so lovely and delightful together.

The Silence were still scary, by the by, although I suppose that now I am programmed to kill them on sight, so they should be less alarming. I don't care, man, the entire abandoned orphanage sequence was pure nightmare fuel.

And lastly, I may have also screamed with joy when Canton wanted to marry someone black, and, PS, a man. We were two for three in our guesses! And I am always delighted to see the Return of the Gay Agenda. CANTONNNNN. <3

Next week: arrr. And a romp, presumably, which we are well due for.

Yes to the Gay Agenda. I was watching with my gay housemate and when we got that reveal we had a shared 'Hah hah, excellent moment.' And as Meatloaf said two out of three isn't bad. Also, you never know, if we meet the man in question in the future he could well be a bit of a commie.

I may have wished half way through the orphanage scene that my boyfriend wasn't at work. Cause I mean obviously I'm all on board with the feminist agenda but, being a massive scaredy cat, I am also on board with the having some one to hide behind and clutch at when things get spooky agenda. I honestly don't know how kids can watch it.

I am however really not sure about this whole last/first thing going on with River and the Doctor. Just because what would be the point of checking the diaries every time they met if it was just a straight backwards/forwards chronology. Come on Moffat stop retconning yourself!

I scremed so much during the orphanage scene and was all like "WHAT THE FUCK?" when the girl regenerated...
I mean...
How can Amy be pregnant one minute and the next... not?
Is the girl a time traveler like the one in "Time Traveller's Wife"?

And when did you hear that Canton wanted to marry a black guy?
I missed that...

And oh, RIVER... I cried so hard for her...

[personal profile] caliena 2011-05-01 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's really like "The Time Traveller's Wife"?
The kid... jumps in time? :D
In and out of the womb?
But normally the mother dies during that...

Ahhh, I got it :D
Thanks :D

If it is the Doctor's kid - and if it is, I call the Silence doing test tube eugenics while they had Amy and the Doctor in custody - maybe being quantum is a sign of Time Lord pregnancy?

Could be...
We'll see :D

Aria, Aria, Aria, did you see, did you see? At 05:30, when they're getting out of the body bags, the Doctor kisses Rory's head then asks if he's okay! (TEAM TARDIS! I like best the sedoretu version of Team TARDIS, where Doctor/River, Amy/River, Doctor/Rory and Amy/Rory are sexual -- or have the potential to be -- while Amy-Doctor and Rory-River are equally important but non-sexual relationships.)

And lastly, I may have also screamed with joy when Canton wanted to marry someone black, and, PS, a man. We were two for three in our guesses!

ahaha! That's exactly what I was thinking. I may have clapped my hands and said, "Thank you, Moff," to the screen, but no one can prove a thing.

here via...someone else's journal, I'm just questing for other people's reaction posts--but this: Obviously it's because they're from the same moiety. is the best thing I've ever heard, and it expresses my own undefinable feelings so perfectly too!

*FLAILS*

Again I say. The Doctor SO has a type. I also ship them like burning. And *is* River human? That was a serious display of reflexes.

I can buy that. I'm very ok with River being human, it just reminded me enough of Jenny's gymnastics through laser beams, that I head tilted.

As a completely left-field thought, toward the question of how Amy might produce a Time Lord daughter: is there any possibility at all that Amy is somehow a descendant of Susan, the Doctor's granddaughter from the original series?

[There may well be all kinds of reasons why this won't or shouldn't work, but considering the sorts of things the present series has tucked up its sleeve over the last while, one does wonder.]

This theory ignores the Big Finish Audio Dramas and some of the novels in which Susan stays with her human husband for thirty years and bears only one child, a boy named Alex. Just assume that, through the Trousers of Time, both timelines are equally valid, because that's the theory of the BBC writers--that everything that has been stated to happen to the Doctor HAS happened, even if it doesn't match continuity. Somewhere, somewhen, it all happened.

Okay. Here's my theory.

Susan ended up with David Campbell, a human freedom fighter in a 22nd century in which the Daleks had taken over Earth and were just enslaving the hell out of everyone. That timeline doesn't seem to exist anymore, which may be why the Doctor says that he DID have a family--he assumes that Susan died when the timeline vanished.

However. We ARE talking about the Doctor's granddaughter here, and I think that Susan would have found a way out of that timeline when she discovered it was vanishing. The easiest thing to do would have been to move sideways in space from the alternate dimension in which the Daleks won--and entering and exiting parallel dimensions happened ALL THE TIME in Classic Who--to the mainstream universe in which her grandfather lived. But, because time often flowed differently in little pocket universes--at least according to Classic Who--she and David didn't end up in the 22nd century, but the late 20th century...where they were nearly erased from existence. They would have been, if not for the fact that their Gallifreyan-Human daughter had the power to reboot reality. A Time Lord talent, perhaps?

I don't think it's really occurred to Amy just how odd she is; I think she just figures odd things happen around the Doctor. I would bet, however, that it's occurred to Rory the Ex-Plastic Roman. Somehow, Amy ends up being the focus of a lot of universe-altering trouble.

And judging by the expression on the Doctor's face when he scanned Amy and discovered that her baby simultaneously existed and did not exist in space-time, it may be starting to occur to him that Amy may be closer to his kind than he dreamed.

Oh, and the Time Tot looked a LOT like wee Amy. I wonder if the Silents didn't clone Amy and then put the clone in her body to incubate. Or if they somehow spliced together Amy's and the Doctor's DNA to create the little girl that they need for whatever reason.

Of course, this is all speculation and it will probably get Jossed next week. But it's fun, just the same.

No, you are -- that was the Doctor's point about everyone seeing the moon landing video at least once in their life. The subliminal message is in every recording, so you'd still be programmed.

I think possibly he was being a little optimistic there. We didn't have a TV until I was 13, and I never saw it in school. The clips in DW were, in fact, the only footage I've ever seen of the moon landing. I should go look it up on YouTube, just to be sure!

The Doctor/River banter was so hot. SO SO HOT. So was the kiss, of course, but the banter was just . . . nrghhh.

Thank God we're getting a romp next week. I need one badly (and so do the characters, I imagine).

I think we started shipping them like burning last week when it became apparent that it would be hot like burning? I don't know. I support River being, functionally speaking, Indiana Jones' daughter, too.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD, Aria, so right, I just watched this today (AM JUST ABOUT TO WATCH PIRATE EPISODE AND THEN EPISODE BY YOU KNOW WHO) and omg omg. omggggg. I already shipped River/Doctor hard hard HARD, BUT THIS EPISODE. All of his firsts are her lasts. Waaaaaaaaaah. :(((( and the flirting and shooting and "Unlike me she really doesn't mind shooting people. I shouldn't like that, kinda do a bit." "Thank you, sweetie!" "Stop it." "Make me." "Maybe I will!" nngh oh man I love them. wuv wuv wuv.

lol this comment is awful. oh well I just wanted to ~share (Actually I came for your thoughts on the little girl who also made me scream with happy and got distracted by Riverrrr).

ETA: I fixed the HTML, and also, I think that's the first time I've *ever* edited a comment. cool, cool, cool.
