eight legs to the wall

It seems that mid-November is being bleak and hideous to everyone. For me this is mostly manifesting as a desire to hibernate, but while I am awake, I have been trying to seek out and create happy things. So here are two links and a poll!

i. Grace Jeanette sings "Na Na Na": that is, the adorable little girl from the Killjoys universe does a jazzy piano rendition that is almost unbearably cute. HUGS GIMME HUGS.

ii. Damn You, Auto Correct! What it says on the tin, really; it almost makes me want to get a smartphone, if only because the things are apparently hilariously dumb. I literally laughed until I cried reading through this.

iii. So uh I hear there might be this movie about a boy wizard coming out tomorrow? (The movie is coming out, I mean. I'm pretty sure the boy wizard has to wait until part two for his mentor to do that? IDK.) I sometimes pretend it has been years since Harry Potter was really important to me, but it is actually still mildly dangerous to say things to me like "What do you think about the treatment of Harry's parents' generation in Deathly Hallows?" or "Talk to me about the Black family!" or "So that Dumbledore guy ..." I have Opinions! And Feelings! And while I don't remember a lot of things that happen in DH (seriously, there was a dragon in the trailer and I was totally at sea -- this is what happens when you only read something once) I am still wicked psyched about it. So I think it is time for an impromptu show of hands! Tell me which Hogwarts house you belong in.

These polls always throw me, because if you're asking which house 11-year-old me belongs in, it's Ravenclaw all the way, baby! But if you're asking which house twenty-mumble-year-old me belongs in, it might be Gryffindor. (Or maybe Hufflepuff, as I am big on loyalty, but maybe not, as the consistent and hard-working bit is ... not so much. Hufflepuffs are not really described as committing to too many interesting things and then scrambling to meet their deadlines, iirc. Perhaps I have just made an argument for adult membership in Ravenclaw after all.)

My thoughts, I haz them, apparently! Let me show you them. :D

It has actually been so long since I've read any of the books that I sometimes forget what's canon and what's just head!canon that I've acquired from the truly remarkable quantity of fic I've read over the years. Like, I get into discussions sometimes with people RL about Harry Potter, and I explain my opinion of, say, the house system, and they look at me with mild puzzlement, and I start to go, "hang on a moment...."

At any rate, I thought FAR TOO MUCH about the houses as a kid, so I can tell you the house of all my family and many of my friends, just off the top of my head. And for the record, although I voted Ravenclaw, I'm really more of a Ravenpuff -- my Ravenclaw side favours Knowledge and Understanding The World pretty highly, but my Hufflepuff side is all, "But! Being nice to people, being fair, stuff like that is important, and Knowledge does not trump that!

Oh god, I know, THE HOUSE SYSTEM. That is one of the things that gets me all riled up and talkative too. And actually, what makes me even more riled up and talkative is the fact that, yes, it is one of the damn points of the books, but it STILL falls into the trap of believing in the system to some extent at least, as evidenced by the way that in the epilogue people are still ragging on the Slytherins with little hint of authorial disagreement. Oh, Harry says to his kid that IT'S TOTALLY COOL IF YOU'RE SLYTHERIN, but apparently Harry's the only one who believes it...

aw, Opinions and Feelings! I so know what you mean; I had to forbid my students from talking about Harry Potter so that I didn't end up going on a huge rant and using up all our class time. They were like, "So, if Dumbledore is gay, but not gay in the books . . . " and I had to do the Austin Powers-style zipit routine. I told them that I had too many Opinions and Feelings and thus refused to moderate any related discussion. They thought it was hilarious. :)

DUDE DUDE I have like tomorrow night to bind off my Ravenclaw scarf and put fringe on it (book colors, thankyouverymuch). How Ravenclawish is it to put that kind of thing off til the last minute, exactly?

Heh, the Ravenclaws are pwning. *laughs* I'm one of your two Gryffindors, although in the spirit of honesty I'm pretty Ravenclawish these days. Which would make me, what, a Gryffinclaw? A Ravendor? I'm not very good at the portmantaeu house names. ^^'

It would be either Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, and whichever I landed in I would have felt missorted, made friends in other houses, and/or wandered off alone a lot. The forced social groups of the houses would have driven me bonkers, honestly.

And word on having Opinions. I was at the start of my twenties when I started reading the series, so I didn't exactly grow up with it the way a lot of people did, but I still have Opinions. Many of them. I don't know how anyone can talk about Harry Potter without going on at length - or, indeed, if anyone ever does.

After years of deliberation I have reluctantly settled on Slytherin, even though all the kindergoths choose that house. XD Really, though, all it means is that you combine a strong desire to change the world with a healthy sense of self-preservation. That's not edgy-for-the-sake-of-edgy, that's smart. (Y)

Also, TALK TO ME ABOUT THE BLACK FAMILY, because I don't believe I have heard your Opinions yet! :D

Fear not, I don't think all self-identified (always- or sometimes-)Slytherins are kindergoths. XD One just worries that, if one identifies as such, one will be accused of bartending in the dark.

Your opinions on the Black family are good and you should feel good! :D

We are fandom fossils and it is awesome. XD

PS: I love how heavily your flist is slanted toward Ravenclaw.

I am actually kind of a Gryffindor who wants to be a Slytherin, but I am vaguely embarrassed about both these things, so I cling to being a Ravenclaw. It is kind of like splitting the difference.

I feel extra certain of this as I attended a 4-house university with very plain Harry Potter correlations!

I... would really like to say that I am something other than a Gryffindor! Because the hipster in me is going "GRYFFINDOR IS SO VANILLA, GAWD." I wish that Slytherins were characterized well enough for me to claim that I am a Slytherin on the grounds that I often, er, accidentally, value wittiness over kindness, but since Slytherin has only ever been "evil!!1!!" I really don't think I can do that. So I will join the Gryffindor team!

...alas, I am too young, fannishly, to have a Harry Potter icon!

I identify as a Ravenpuff--intelligence is important, but so are justice, loyalty, patience, truth, and hard work. And if I have to pick, one, I'll go with Hufflepuff. (Some things just do not change.)

I have pondered over this house thing and whether it puts you in the house that matches the traits that are ~strongest~ in you, or if it puts you in the house that matches the traits you think are the most important/valuable traits. If it's the former, I'd ~probably~ be a Ravenclaw. If it's the latter I'd be a Hufflepuff. I think I'd be much better at being a Ravenclaw than a Hufflepuff, but Hufflepuff has the traits I ~really wish~ were stronger in me. Soooooooo yeah, hm, where would the house sort me? Haha well, like someone said above, if this were at age 11, I think the hat would have definitely put me in Ravenclaw. Now I think it's a toss up. The parts of me that are scared of being challenged would cling to Ravenclaw still, but those challenges would probably be good for me. So I think the hat now would put me in Hufflepuff. Maybe. XD

ARIA I NEED TO DISCUSS MY HOUSE WITH YOU. I'm so ~conflicted~. Everyone and their mother is always all, "YOU ARE A GRYFFINDOR," but I am a fucking Slytherin and always have been--

What I'm trying to say it, I have never taken a Harry Potter character quiz on which I didn't get Dumbledore. /o\

SHUT UP OKAY, it is early and I am seeing DH today and I am allowed.

I am actually a Ravenclaw, but I usually say I'm a Hufflepuff, because Hufflepuff does not get enough love. (Also because I have the scarf, but shh.)

I think I'm actually a Slitherclaw, because I like to learn things and then use my knowledge for nefarious purposes. But I'm glad I voted Slytherin, because clearly we are an oppressed minority on your flist. What, are you like, too cool to hang out with Slytherins? <3333

PS I am totally writing essays right now!
