Okay, here is a real first entry!

I decided not to import my entire LJ here, mostly because there is something vastly relieving about not having a journal that starts with my freshman year of high school (but instead the summer before my senior year of undergrad; I'm sure it will be just as embarrassing in a couple of years).

I'll be using this journal in basically the same way I used the LJ: fandom talk, real life talk, talking-with-people, &c. One of the nifty things about Dreamwidth, though, is the seriously wonderful access/subscription feature: not only does the loaded word 'friend' come into it nowhere, but it makes organising things a lot easier -- such as this thing I want to try where I'm going to more or less divide up the fandom talk and the real life talk. The idea of separate real life and fandom journals hurts both my head and soul, because there is probably no way I will ever be able to actually separate real life from the fannishly tinged, but I think I can probably at least get away with an unlocked-locked dichotomy. The unlocked content will therefore be reviews and meta and silly picspams and links and fic; the locked content will be all the real life stuff (at the moment, mostly job and grad school dithering). If you're just here for the fannish stuff, feel free to subscribe and lurk happily away; if you want to know me and my dithering real life ways, come say hi.

I know pretty much everyone subscribed to me right now is a refugee from my LJ flist -- so I'd love to take a headcount. LOOK A HEADCOUNT POLL.

I have, confusingly, checked both of the "primary journal" boxes to indicate that things posted to LJ will be mirrors of DW posts, and that some things will only be posted to DW. Basically, this is the place to read me!

Mine is not 100% mirrored with LJ; there's some DW-exclusive content and some LJ-exclusive content, but ... very little LJ-exclusive content and lots more semianonymous DW-exclusive stuff.

When the urge to post strikes me, the post goes where it wills! Sometimes that is LJ and sometimes DW. I was going to have a system but then I didn't. But I will! maybe! someday!

What I would like best is to just use DW and bury my LJ under a volcano, where no one can find it again. Only, people's inertia thwarts me!

Um, do what I am doing! Only instead of crossposting, make posts that say "THE POST YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IS HERE" with a link to DW, and after people have stopped being inert, you can bury your LJ under a volcano! (I will look for a nice one & bury mine also eventually, I think.)

I did that one time ... I don't think I want to do it more. Maybe I will just try to figure out who, among the people I really want to read my journal, does not have a DW and throw codes at their heads until they obey me. And then silently switch horses midstream! yes!

I'm glad you have made the switch pretty much 4 real, it is really comforting to me. AND I want to ask! Did you find out if it is easy to import just certain entries instead of your whole journal? Though I kind of think, what is the point, maybe I will go through my LJ and delete all the things I do not want anymore but still not import what's left ... oh who knows. this is a terrible thought cycle, it just goes around and around.

I like this throwing-codes-at-people plan. IT IS A GOOD PLAN. I am less sure of the whole switching-horses-midstream part of it, though, because that sounds sort of dangerous.

And um I have NO IDEA how the importing deal works; I did not import anything at all for this journal, and I imported my entire fic journal and then got rid of a few entries I didn't like anymore. I think not importing and keeping the LJ whole but locked is probably sanest, but my sane might not be your sane.

I'm crossposting most of my stuff, but for the most part I have a different group of people in my DW circle than on my LJ friendslist, so I'm still working out what goes where. Fic certainly won't be crossposted-- probably posted to LJ and then linked from DW. So it'll probably be approximately the same either way.

It's complicated :/ Basically I was in an off-LJ forum and we'd been too lazy to friend each other on LJ, but then DW happened and we all went OMG SHINY MUST MAKE ONE and everyone ran around friending everyone else.

Heh. I am going to import my LJ soon, when I move over here (have not yet done that, obviously), and in preparation, I'm finally going back and tagging all of my entries. And, oh, man, was I ridiculously little in 2000-2001. I didn't think so at the time; it was my first year of grad school, and I was so sure I was a grown-up, but looking back? Eeep! I was so incredibly *young*. I had no idea. (I also had no sense of boundaries and posted *way* too many things not-privately or not under flock.) I'm keeping all that with it while moving over here because I like having everything in the same place, but it sure is weird to read!

Also, once I get everything set up here, it will (I think) be my main journal, but I haven't done it yet, so I didn't want to check that in the poll, because for now LJ is still where I'm at.

Heh. I think that's probably true of anyone starting an online journal, no matter their age; I'm completely bewildered about the sort of personal information stuff I posted out of flock at the age of fifteen. I think at least part of it was that I assumed no one would actually find my LJ, though? Maybe that's also part of it.

Agreed! The thing is, I don't believe they will. I have trouble buying the idea that a mass migration will actually happen. People tend to be kind of set in their ways, and although DW is taking off more than I thought, I can't really see everyone moving house.

IDK, a lot of my flist actually is moving. The communities might take some more work, but I don't really mind dividing time and being patient.

Fair enough! Mine isn't, so much, but I think that may have to do with the sort of people on our respective flists. I tend not to have so many people who are hooked into fannish politics, it seems like. And that's too bad! Because I like DW and eventually want to move here for good.

O yes, awareness of/investment in fannish politics probably has a lot to do with it. And anyway I'm not trying to rush anyone because, seriously, this thing is still in beta. No hurry.
