last kid standing up against the wall
I have been watching a truly awful amount of Smallville. It's not even as though I started out watching for Lex and stayed for something else (although if I were to stay for something else, it would be for Chloe and, to my surprise, Lois); no, I've been watching truly awful amounts of Smallville just for good Lex episodes. I didn't really realize the depths to which I'd sunk until I looked in the mirror yesterday and discovered that I'd absently put on a blue shirt and a red jacket. Today, with resignation, it's a red shirt and blue plaid flannel, hell yeah I own blue plaid flannel. I am sad I do not have any absurd purple shirts.
My point is, I think I can officially add Smallville to the List of Things I Am Ridiculously Overinvested In. I am still resisting the urge to actually just break down and genuinely watch ALL THE LEX (it wouldn't be too hard; I have perfected the art of skipping through episodes in search of Lex and of avoiding Lana almost entirely -- see also Reasons I Hate Season Six) but so far I have found it more expedient to just track down lots of vids. Say what you like about the plot, but this show's visuals are often completely gorgeous.
Therefore: vids!
Baby: Clark is a big, dumb, sexually confused alien. It is a really good thing he is pretty. Yeah, pretty much! This vid gives me a big stupid grin. It's kinetic and full of awkward teenagers! (Things I especially love: Chloe and her lollipop, Clark's panicked faces, and Lex shattering a sword on Clark's arm. Good god, what episode is that last one from?)
Faster Kill Pussycat: Chloe/Lana! I am so delighted this vid exists, if only because it reclaims and queers the hell out of all the creepy Lana objectification the show does. Hell, it does the double miracle of making me almost as fond of Lana as I am of Chloe, and of making me actually appreciate the vampire episode. Will wonders never cease.
I Kissed A Girl: Speaking of reclaiming and queering things, oh my god, this vid. Clark tries kissing girls! Lex minds it! Ollie seems to mind it less. I love the sheer amount of footage there is of Clark making out with women and looking kind of bewildered about the whole thing. I still completely loathe this song, but this is the best use of it ever.
Intergalactic Friends: I sort of think of this one as Bad Romance's slash-optional younger sibling. It's snappy and weird and alien, and full of the sort of parallel shots that I am really easy for; the Lex-in-the-sunflowers Clark-in-the-graveyard around 1:48 alone is worth the price of admission.
Objection (Tango): Possibly the one thing in the world that makes me think s6 was almost worth it. (Well, one of two: the other is Nemesis.) Clark and Lex's awful breakup, with bonus Lana. I find this vid unbearably hot; maybe it's the movement in it, or possibly the way it has all of the things I love best about Lex. I've watched this one a ridiculous number of times in the past few days.
Short Skirt Long Jacket: LOIS. <3 The thing is, I want a vid to this song for so many women; my short list is Amy Pond, Laura Roslin, Delenn, and Amanda, but it could go on. This vid has probably already cornered the market. It's the perfect Short Skirt Long Jacket vid. It convinces me that I really want to be Lois' best friend. She'd probably hate me, though. I'd just stare at her legs all the time.
That's Not My Name: Clark and his identity issues. Oh my god. Know what I am easy for? Identity issues! This vid is almost too perfect. It performs the double miracle of making me like Clark and making him interesting. He's a dorky alien farmboy trying to do the right thing and occasionally being hailed as a savior! Be still my heart.
There are also two vids that don't exist (to the best of my knowledge) but really, really should. The first one is a vid to Handlebars; I know that nothing can top the Tenth Doctor version, but I really, really want the one about Lex (and Clark) becoming awful people. It would be all fast cars and Warrior Angel comics and saving each other and LuthorCorp experiments and stumbling through tunnels and nuclear missiles! And it would probably make me cry. It would be great.
The second one is ... kind of cracky? It's to Jessie's Girl, and is about how Clark and Lex use Lana as a proxy. Did I mention how angry I am that they use Lana as a proxy? And all the musical bridges of the song would be Lana nearly killing Lionel and faking her death and generally getting her goddamn agency back.
Yeah, the vids-in-my-head folder is getting pretty full.

WHY DO YOU LIKE SHALOTT

sf;aksdfa that's a huge part of it! I hate when someone popular writes the characters in an UTTERLY STUPID way and then THE REST OF FANDOM STARTS DOING IT.

Also, apparently I'm really easy for people with people with powers they don't quite understand or know how to deal with, as bits of That's Not My Name proved to me*, because despite me finding the vid mostly incomprehensible, it still made me actually almost want to watch the show. (ALMOST)
*I haven't a clue if I'm even interpreting those bits correctly, buuuut c'est la vie.

You are absolutely interpreting those bits correctly! It is about Clark not always understanding or dealing with his powers, and also trying to juggle who he is around which people, and and and. *happyflail*

Also, it is ALL YOUR FAULT that "I Kissed A Girl" is now thoroughly stuck in my head.... Amazing vid, but gosh, I just want to knife that song in the back.

OH GOD I AM SORRY. It is such a completely hideous song. I suggest watching Objection (Tango) a bit more until you have that stuck in your head instead! Or, if it's not earwormy enough, Bad Romance.

(also, man, the more times I watch Objection (Tango) the more I realize that Lex is actually objectively attractive. His bald head just KEEPS THROWING OFF MY ABILITY TO JUDGE. Lack of hair = sad Sophia.)
no subject
(Lex: TOTALLY objectively attractive! It took me a few episodes because of the lack of hair, so I really sympathize. But man, Lex. *flail*)

(I think it would take me a LONG TIME to get over Lex's hairlessness, if I ever could. I mean, I watched Daniel Jackson for SEASONS after he cut his hair short, and he was just never as attractive again. *sigh*)
no subject
(That is fair! In most cases I am all in favor of hair. The funny thing is, though, I've seen pictures of Lex's actor with hair, and my reaction is "...but now you just look like everyone else! :(" Lex is apparently a special case for me.)

(*googles pics of Lex's actor* Hmmm. He certainly loses the Lexish aura when he gains hair, which is definitely a shame, but I still maintain he's more attractive with hair.)

(I was never quite sure, when I was watching Smallville as a kid - and holy shit, that was nine years ago, I was eleven, when did I get old? - whether Lana was a terrible character, a terribley treated character, or just not as cool as Chloe. Which wouldn't really have been her fault, because no one is as cool as Chloe. My Dad liked to taunt me by pointing out that as one of the few characters not canon to the comics, she'd be the easiest to kill off. Take THAT, father dearest - nine years and still kicking!)
I've loved "Not My Name" and "I Kissed a Girl" for a while, but now I can add "Objection (Tango)" and "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" to the list. "Objection (Tango)" has, for the reccord, made me ship Clark/Lex more than anything in the whole universe ever previously had.

Augh, Lana is such a dilemma for me! I didn't start out hating her, but after a certain point I just had to start skipping all of her scenes -- and it's not like the actress is objectively terrible or anything! I think it's that the character is written as that Lana's inherent awesomeness should be self-evident, but ... what they give her is mostly sad, sad looks and occasionally righteous indignation, and that's not enough to hold a character together, or go anywhere towards explaining why Clark stays attracted to her. The awful thing is that it looks like the answer is "Force of habit" and then, later, "An excuse to lash out at Lex."
That, or it's just that no one's as cool as Chloe. :D
I'm honestly afraid that if I watch Objection (Tango) too many times, my screen is going to burst into flames. Heh.

And yet, the sacrifice might be worth it. *grins and goes off to watch it again*
Sidenote: I'm totally creeping on your and Sophia's conversation above, and for the record, the first time I watched "Bad Romance" I interpreted Lex Luthor does not want to be friends!! as "Lex Luthor hates Superman and wants him to die. Friendship/affection is not on his list of priorities. This is an anti Clark/Lex vid meant to point out why their relationship would never work." And I thought, huh, I don't think these clips were very well selected... he seems to spend a lot of time helping and/or trying to kiss Clark, for a guy who wants him dead... and then I shrugged and moved on with my life. Then I saw you guys talking about it, and rewatched it. And the epiphany dawned. I like it much better now. *grin*

Because yes, Chloe and Lois are both totally capable of doing their own thing and being awesome at it -- they're friends, confidants, good at their jobs, even comic relief before they are love interests, and that helps immensely. Whereas I try to think of salient characteristics for Lana that aren't 'love interest' and the best I can come up with is 'runs the Talon' which is at least awesome in theory! Or she gets to be evil and sexy, in which case she's still a damn prop.
Ohhh, I can see how the Bad Romance summary is potentially misleading! But no, it is the most Clark/Lex-y Clark/Lex vid in the WORLD. It's just about a romance of mutually assured destruction instead of, y'know, puppies and rainbows. :D

(Anonymous) 2010-10-07 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)I watched season 1-6 all in one month.
Kinda sad what it says about my life...
Anyway: Love Lex. Even if he's bald.
And I love the Objection vid and - even so I hate the song, too - the I kissed a girl one.
