in the way that a friend feels about another friend

When I said I wasn't bringing any TV on vacation with me, I lied.

I think s3 may in fact be far and away my favourite. How much I love something is directly proportional to how much I write about it, and this is the first season that I need to stick behind a cut.

+ Irresistible, which I remember from years ago as one of the fun cracky romp episodes, squicked me the fuck out. Hugely. The levity with which Lucius pheromone-roofies everyone into liking him is balanced out by the way it's so clearly Not A Good Thing, but only barely. I still like it as an episode, but now I like it not in the "Watch everyone become hilarious sheep!" way but in the "This freaks me out, oh my god John DO SOMETHING" way.

+ The scene between John and Teyla in Sateda! The one where John is awful at talking about his feelings but still manages to get out the part where he'd do literally anything for his team? Yeah. That. That is why I am giving this show a watch. <3

+ I completely adore Common Ground. There is something wonderful about John not giving that Wraith a stupid name, and their wary understanding/not-understanding, and ahhh. That's the show doing its good stuff.

+ I remember the first time I saw McKay and Mrs. Miller it was the best. thing. ever. Now I kind of want to punch Rodney's team in the face for laughing at stories of his obviously shitty childhood, but I still love Jeannie and also possibly the message of We Love Rodney, Faults And All, Because He's Our Rodney. That's still nice.

+ John Sheppard quotes The Princess Bride. I knew there was a reason he was my space boyfriend. Other reasons he is my space boyfriend include, but are not limited to, his massive insubordination at all times, his weird ability to connect with people and see through illusions and intuitively understand things while still remaining hugely inarticulate about everything ever, and the way by s3 I read him as pretty damn gay. (I think I have a fictional type, but I'll need to get back to you on why he reminds me strongly of Ray Kowalski, and "I find them similarly fun to write" is not a real answer.)

+ Tao of Rodney is still far and away my favourite episode of possibly the entire series. It's one big mess of everything I love about Rodney. They actually do a decent job giving Rodney a character arc; he's decent and he cares about people deeply and he's capable of emotional honesty and he's hugely smart, and none of this actually stops him from panicking or being arrogant or unintentionally rude or anything. (I'm not sure why Rodney is not also my space boyfriend! I love him vastly but I'm almost completely incapable of identifying with him, which I understand makes me a rare specimen among people who like Rodney.)

+ Tao of Rodney may also be a big mess of everything I love about John, but I'm not sure how I feel about the scene near the end, the one where Elizabeth says, "Know that we love you," and Ronon and Teyla just sort of stand there in team-memberly support, but John feels the need to qualify it with "In the way a friend feels about another friend." I don't know quite what to make of it! Is it the writers trying to tell us to ahh stop shipping John/Rodney? It may very well be, but it just makes me keep reading John as seriously closeted. I'm not sure if I like it, though.

+ Is s4 when Rodney finally gets with the program that everyone else has been with for ages and actually calls John "John" instead of "Sheppard" or "Colonel" or whatever? I ask this because I keep being confused every time "Sheppard" comes out of Rodney's mouth, mostly because it was "John" in s4, but also because due South has trained me to be acutely aware of names. I remember that in 2006 when I was doing most of my SGA fic-reading, every time John was John in Rodney-narrative or Rodney-voice without any explanation, it drove me up the wall to exactly the same extent that an unjustified "Benton" or "Ben" does from RayK. (On the other hand, justified John in Rodney-voice was always fabulous, whereas I'm not sure I can ever train myself to not be bothered by Ben.) Anyway, does anyone know exactly which episode the first "John" occurs in? I hope there are entire getting-together theories based around it; if not I will be very disappointed.

+ sdsklds TANGENT; I'm not watching every single episode, so I just swung by wiki to see when Weir gets Replicator-doomed, and came across this freaking amazing sentence that goes The character was primarily played by Torri Higginson, although when introduced in the Stargate SG-1 two-parter "Lost City", she was played by Jessica Steen. JESSICA STEEN. Benton Fraser's baby sister, in my show? IT'S MORE LIKELY THAN YOU THINK. Okay, enough Canadian Actor Bingo, now back to your regularly scheduled program and also my sudden huge desire to watch "Lost City".

+ Bye, Carson. Bye, Elizabeth. I can never decide whether or not Elizabeth's mostly-death breaks my heart or not; I get the sneaking suspicion that they shamefully underuse Sam Carter next season, but at the same time I'm not sure what more they would have done with Elizabeth, and -- it's not like she can go back to Earth. Ever. They'd have to pry Atlantis from her cold dead hands. So I suppose that dying in drawn-out convoluted ways in the Pegasus Galaxy is probably the way to go. Meanwhile we've got Carson and his guilt-trip-about-fishing exploding-tumor episode. I never know what to do about Carson's death. I do know that it's a little depressing that only three of the s1 main cast make it all the way through, but eh. Bring on (bits of) s4?

There is a [personal profile] crysothemis vid called "Say My Name" based around the name thing! So, yes, it's a Thing. I'm not sure which episode exactly we hear Rodney say 'John', I think it's the one where they are flying the city through space to another planet?

And yes, 'Irresistible' is WAY squicky.

Now you're making me want to rewatch SGA. I ALREADY HAVE TOO MUCH TO WATCH. And, uh, I'm totally going to have to see if my SG-1 friend has season 7 so that I can rewatch "Lost City".

Ummm, the first time Rodney calls him John? Somewhere near the end of season 3, I'm sure.

this entirely based on shoddy memory of something I think I heard someone say on LJ once, but possibly the first time Mckay calls Sheppard "John" is in that episode where Elizabeth is dying, and one of them decides to go ahead with some kind of replicator-related procedure, and the other finds out after and is mad?

I can't even remember what episode that IS, but apparently when John confronts Rodney is when Rodney first says "John" (though, again, based on vague memory of an LJ comment).
