I actually really approved of how the HBP film handled it -- Hermione does attack Ron with the birds, but they don't hit him, just the wall, and she does it sort of ... as though the boy she loved was being stupid and so she threw a pillow at him and missed, not as though she viciously attacked him. That I bought, and did not freak me out.
