the usual fannish blather
Last night, I dreamed that Sherlock was going to be canceled. Unlikely, self! Obviously I was projecting my ongoing Community anxieties.
In any case, here, have a Sherlock vs Doctor Who meme
1. Sherlock or Doctor Who
Despite the fact that my brain has been tuned in to Radio Sherlock for two months and counting now, I'm fairly sure that until I write 150,000+ words of Sherlock fic, the answer is going to stay Doctor Who.
2. Moriarty or the Master?
Oh, that's hardly fair. I ended up liking Moriarty by the end of Reichenbach Fall, but until then I was mostly convinced he was a bewilderingly shrieky knockoff of Simm!Master. And even if we call other Moriartys in as evidence, both the canon and Granada TV versions made next to no impression on me, and the one in Gay of Shadows was serviceable, I guess, but then they're up in competition against Delgado and Ainley. The Master wins this question by goddamn lightyears.
3. Benedict or Martin?
I think the only way to fairly measure this question is to ask myself if I'm more ridiculously excited for the Star Trek sequel or the Hobbit, and then I realize that this isn't actually a fair way to measure this question, but I'm still giving this one to Martin because how am I actually supposed to choose.
4. Favourite Doctor Who companion?
This question needs to be in the plural, because the answer is in fact Barbara, Jamie, Zoe, Jo, the Brig, Sarah Jane, Tegan, Turlough, Ace, Martha, Donna, Rory, and Amy, SO THERE.
5. Favourite Doctor
Quite seriously whichever Doctor I'm watching at the time is my favorite (except for poor Six, I'M SORRY SIX) so I suppose at the moment my answer is Eleven.
6. Favourite Sherlock character
Um well Sherlock's John Watson is a Watson very much after my own heart, because he is this perfect storm of unassuming and ordinary and long-suffering while also being a stone-cold badass and occasionally alarming. The other top contender is Molly Hooper, although that's at least half fandom's fault.
7. Favourite Sherlock episode
A solid tie between Study in Pink and Reichenbach Fall. Although Hounds also holds up really well. I think my real answer is OH GOD GUYS I JUST HATE BLIND BANKER SO MUCH.
8. Favourite Doctor Who episode story
In new Who I still haven't met an episode that tops my unreasonable love for Empty Child/Doctor Dances. Old school, I am particularly fond of War Games and Mind of Evil and the Keeper of Traken/Logopolis/Castrovalva arc and quite possibly everything with Seven and Ace.
9. Favourite Doctor Who monster
The Weeping Angels. I don't care how much Moffat ruined them in subsequent appearances, you can't take Blink away from me.
10. Least favourite Sherlock character
It feels like such a cop-out to say Anderson, but he's so boring to me because he's a convenient receptacle for fandom's vitriol and I don't see in him any interesting hook to make him worth saving. (Unlike Donovan, COME AT ME, I will defend Sally Donovan to the death.)
11. Least favourite Doctor Who character
Umm let's be boring and off the top of my head say Davros, because I really can't bring myself to care about him. Probably there are characters I like less but I can't be bothered to search my brain for them.
12. The Doctor or Sherlock?
Oh really now that's not fair either. All versions of Sherlock Holmes are quite clever and solve crimes and aren't terribly good at humans, which I am a big fan of, but all versions of the Doctor are all these things also but take you on SPACE AND TIME ADVENTURES, obviously the Doctor wins by a lot.
13. Rose Tyler or Amy Pond?
I have this bizarre relationship with Rose Tyler where I reflexively want to defend her from most of the later writing they gave her and from myself; I realize that I should probably also want to defend Amy from some of her later writing? And I am fond of Rose, but at the end of the day, Amy's the one I want to dash about having mad adventures with.
14. Least favourite companion?
Peri. Sorry, Peri! I hear they do right by you and Six in audios, but I mostly don't have the attention span for audios.
15. Thoughts on Mycroft/Lestrade
Um well presumably it exists because people think it would be hot to squish Mark Gatiss and Rupert Graves together! Which is cool! But my pairing of choice for Sherlock characters who hardly interact is Lestrade/Molly. And um my crack Lestrade pairing is that he is actually Alec from Maurice and he and Maurice accidentally time-traveled like eighty years into the future and -- actually that's a whole other post, hold that thought, someday soon I will talk about the time-traveling Sherlock Holmes crossover that I thought up with Emma.
16. What do you think of Molly Hooper?
YES LET'S TALK ABOUT MOLLY. I think the show is flat awful to her, and that Sherlock's slow realization that maybe it's not okay to be so hideously manipulative of her is really not enough at all; but I love Molly herself, who pushes past the words she's been given to feel like a full person rather than a prop for Sherlock's story. This is assisted massively by fandom, thank you for being good about this one thing and giving her her own stories. I just love her a whole lot, and I think there will shortly be a Fics About Molly rec post.
17. Do you believe in Sherlock Holmes?
Well, I do occasionally consider putting up #believeinsherlock posters on telephone polls downtown. But mostly I just want to roll my eyes and say, of course he's not a fraud, now get on with it, where's third series?
18. 10th Doctor or 11th?
Oh my god Eleven. I mean, I loved Ten lots for nearly his whole run, but in retrospect I mostly just want to hit him, and not in the sexy way. Whereas Eleven is basically a perfect storm of all my favorite things in various past Doctors, and I am not going to paragraph about what exactly those are because it takes more articulation than I care to give off the cuff for a meme, but yes, I adore Eleven.
19. 9th Doctor or 10th
Poor Ten, of course the answer is Nine. Nine is My Doctor, and his single season is nearly perfect in all the ways that matter.
20. 11th Doctor or 9th
This is a very new Who meme, isn't it? I'll say Eleven again, but only on the grounds that he's the one I've watched most recently.
21. Thoughts on Johnlock?
Sigh. I know tumblr doesn't believe in tags that involve a / but I have somehow managed to nearly always be in fandoms that don't go the pairingsmush route, and as a result I still find pairingsmush ship names kind of idiotic. I should probably get over myself! But I would much rather ask obnoxious questions like Why Johnlock? How about Sherjohn? Or Jolmes! Or Watsolmes! Oh man I like Watsolmes. I would suggest Hotson except that I understand this is the actual correct name of Jude Law's Watson, and is therefore offlimits for pairingsmush.
22. Sherlock or Doctor Who cast
Hahaha I mean the Sherlock cast is lovely, if frustratingly short on women (seriously -- among the other ridiculous Sherlock things Emma and I discussed, we outlined a whole genderswap universe, and this other version of Sherlock was just ALL LADIES ALL THE TIME). But Doctor Who has had nearly everyone, and I love all their stupid faces SO MUCH.
