bordom begets memes

All I have been doing today is cleaning and generally making things look presentable and completely failing to start packing, so it is time for a meme.

First TV show I had self-insertion fantasies about:

Since I didn't actually watch much TV in a systematic way until I was sixteen, and by then I was way past my self-insertion phase, let's talk about books instead! There was the time I created a young elf maiden to help Frodo and Sam on their journey to Mordor, and the time that I made up my own girl who disguised herself as a boy to become a knight of Tortall, but these were more enthusiastic extensions in my head of things I was reading than straight-up self-insertions. That honor belongs to a month when I was twelve or so and wrote a detailed diary as though I'd received my Hogwarts letter and was having my first year as a Gryffindor during the events of Chamber of Secrets. Years later I find this hilarious because I'm a big old Ravenclaw. I wonder if I still have that notebook somewhere.

First fandom in which I interacted (online and in person) with other fans:

Harry Potter, during the Three Year Summer! I was only about thirteen when I found online fandom, though, so the notion of actually hanging out with a bunch of people in person to be fannish together was still really foreign to me.

Pairing in the first (m/m) slash fanfiction I read:

Remus/Sirius! This was both the first slash I read by accident and the first slash I read on purpose. The first time, I clicked it not knowing what 'slash' meant, and ended up backspacing in bewilderment and wondering worriedly if being really flustered meant I was secretly homophobic. Oh tiny Aria. And then a few weeks later I went back to read it on purpose and fell in starry-eyed love. (It was Out of the Woods by Canis M, by the way. With bonus lesbian centaurs!)

First RPS/RPF I read:

I'm not quite sure! I knew RPF was a thing for years and felt a bit awkward and intrusive about it. I think that the first RPF I didn't feel uncomfortable about and got all the way through was [personal profile] oliviacirce's Adam/Kris/Katy American Idol fic, although I didn't know a thing about any of them at the time, which probably helped with the lack of awkwardness. But then I did learn things about Adam Lambert and didn't actually feel more awkward! So that was nice.

First fanfiction I read that made me think, YES, this is exactly the kind of fanfiction I'd like to write...

There is probably some fic in the depths of the Sugar Quill archive that is the first Harry Potter fic that really clicked and made sense to me and lit me up. But I don't know if there is One Formative Fic out there; I just consumed tons, and kept on consuming them, and figured out what I wanted to write as I muddled along.

Pairing in the first fanfiction I wrote:

Lily/James! Oh hell yeah the 136,000 word epic MWPP fic I wrote in 2001 and 2002.

First OTP:

Ron/Hermione! I wanted them to get together so much! Of course then I discovered Remus/Sirius and didn't read anything else for at least a month straight and had the sort of really urgent feelings that distinguish Something I Ship from Ahh Oh God OTP Forever, so maybe the real answer to this question is Remus/Sirius.

First RPS/F OTP:

I am ... still pretty bad at shipping real people in any way that gives me urgent feelings? But there were a few weeks after I watched Hard Core Logo when all I wanted was Hugh Dillon/CKR fic with happy endings, so that's probably a fair answer to this one.

First fannish friend I met in person:

[personal profile] polarisnorth! And next month I'm going to move into an apartment with her. Fannish friends are, apparently, not just for whatever fandom you initially bond over together, fannish friends are for life.

You know something, I'm fairly sure the first slash fanfiction I ever read was probably something of yours. Although I guess it's possible it could have been something by Darth Maligna? Who was pointed out to me by you, anyway, so either way it all comes down to you. :D

(Also, first fanfiction that made me thing YES, this is the kind of fanfiction I'd like to write, pretty sure that was yours too. :DDD)

((...also I suspect a lot of other people would have the same comment, just laying that out there.))

Well, I was high-school-caliber at the time too so I hardly think apologies are at all necessary. (What, like you need to apologize for being merely high-school-level awesome when we were in high school and not, like, Pulitzer Prize-winner awesome. Seriously.)
