First the best of Sherlock episodes, now this? A week in television that feels specifically designed to give me the maximum amount of delighted feelings!

Writing this post after having watched the episode twice, I am probably able to be more coherent, and also able to do anything besides capslock wildly. My first watch-through, though, had a really absurd amount of me making delighted noises. (Or I thought they were delighted noises, but at one point my mother came by to make sure I was okay, probably because I was wailing. Sorry for alarming you, mum!) Some highlights that elicited noise:

+ Peter slamming Neal into a wall, nngh.

+ Neal's complete unflinching willingness to give up the treasure and his freedom and everything to rescue El. It's Elizabeth. No lies.

+ The moment where, when asked why he's staying, without missing a beat Neal says "You." And then of course goes on to Elizabeth, and Sara, and the general list of excellent things in Neal's current life. And I know Neal's said variations of this before ("You're the only one that I trust"/"I was going to stay"/&c) but every time it punches me right in the heart.

+ EVERYTHING ABOUT KELLER, GODDAMN. It is also apparently a week of slaying me with supervillain (ex)boyfriends!

I also loved, although with slightly less flailing, EVERYTHING ABOUT ELIZABETH. I love that to all intents and purposes she saved herself. She gave the FBI their best lead via dog bite, she tricked her guard into leaving, she scratched up and broke the fucking window, and it was only some bad timing that kept her from getting away clear. I am extra charmed that Diana's the one who saves her from the guard guy, too. A++ all round, show.

And this episode effectively saved Mozzie! I like the notion that before this he was running on the automatic assumption that they still have the dream of a last best score, that Neal hadn't changed, so of course he was terribly hurt when he realized that Neal was ridiculously torn over going; but, given a reason to stay, a reason to give up the treasure, Moz finds himself unburdened too. And I love that he didn't question Neal planning to turn himself in: after all, it's Elizabeth. (I mean, why the fuck it would have to be Neal turning himself in rather than Moz, when actually it was Moz doing all the masterminding and Neal cleaning up the mess, I don't know, except that of course Moz never would turn himself in, but that's where Neal is now.)

Now the treasure plot is doooone. YAY. I actually quite liked Adler, and the stuff that plot gave Alex to do, and the way that being hemmed in made Neal shift and change and grow, but I could have done without the Nazi loot and the damages it did Mozzie, even though they patched those up as best they could. Anyway, that's done! On to the next thing!

Which is ... what? I'm actually kind of boggled, because I know they've been renewed for a fourth season, plus they have another ... five, I think, to go on this one, and we come back around to that observation of Tim DeKay's, that if Peter and Neal resolve their trust issues, that's the part where they fall into bed. (No, really; shh of course he didn't mean it metaphorically.) I mean, presumably they have a ways to go, since Neal's actions did get El kidnapped, but -- he did everything he could to get her back, and he was willing to turn himself in. If that's not screaming all sorts of love and commitment I don't know what is.

So -- in the show in my head, the emotional through-line of the last season and change has been: Neal is in love with Peter and El, they discuss it, Peter puts on indefinite brakes, Neal thinks he'll be okay with this but really, really isn't, so he dates Sara and also lashes out at Peter and considers Mozzie's offer to run off with all the treasure, and when it comes down to the moment of truth, even if he can't have them, Neal will sacrifice everything for the Burkes. I want to know what happens next in the show in my head! I'm really excited for it! Buuuut since it is not actually going to become an onscreen poly party --

Are they going to construct new ways for Neal and Peter to distrust one another? Where are they going with the bit where Neal might get his anklet removed in a few months? Obviously if he does he'll stay working with Peter or there's no show, but -- that's how I thought the show ended. That was my happy ending! I'm equally happy to keep going, though, because of course if Peter's working with Neal, he'll be working with a man who on the one hand helped save Peter's wife and was willing to turn himself in, but on the other hand was on the fence about running for a year, and has said frankly alarming things like "Who says I've hit rock bottom?" (Although auuuugh WAS EL BEING KIDNAPPED ROCK BOTTOM, WAS IT, I MEAN NEAL WAS GOING TO TURN HIMSELF IN, FUCK THIS IS GREAT.) So ... even if the show decides that Neal is no longer Peter's legal responsibility, I think Peter will still think that Neal's responsibility, and it might be really fun to play with that.

Or something else entirely! WE SHALL SEE, meanwhile I am quite pleased and excited to have my show back.
