end-of-season recs
I haven't actually ventured into the less-than-1000-word Treats collection yet, but from the main Yuletide archive, a collection of favorite fics!
2 BROKE GIRLS
The Rat in the Hat
Which chronicles the really-not-a-love-story of Max and Johnny (mostly involving robots), those people who work at the diner before and after Caroline, and especially Max and Caroline's friendship. The voices here are perfect, and there's something like a happy ending.
BACK TO THE FUTURE
Like Water Flowing Underground
This is a story about Marty trying to fit into the new world he's created, but it's even more clever and twisty than that: it's about a whole kaleidoscope of Marty in an infinite number of possible universes, creepy and thoughtful without ever quite descending into horror. It's basically the alarming sci-fi Back to the Future fic I've been wanting for years.
BLACK BOOKS
Swine
Manny craves bacon sandwich, brings home pig. Hilarity ensues. Black Books fic is always of staggeringly high quality, being basically the show in written form, and this one doesn't disappoint; I was laughing helplessly by the end.
COMMUNITY
#AnniesMove
In which Annie really, really wants to be supportive of Troy and Abed's relationship, and isn't feeling at all left out. This is sweet and seriously adorable and, spoilers, ends in threesomes.
22 Short Fics About Abed Nadir
Possibly one of my hands-down favorites this year. Twenty-two loving portraits of Abed, by turns hilarious and heartbreaking, with a strange meta construction that makes it feel like a loving portrait of fandom, too. This made my heart grow about three sizes.
Fandom Studies
Troy and Abed in the Dreamatorium, while Abed takes his plot cues from fanfic. This one probably worked for me so well because the fandom injokes are all for fandoms I have feelings about right now -- Inspector Spacetime, Supernatural, Sherlock Holmes -- but I suspect it'd be really funny and charming regardless.
MAGIC SCHOOL BUS
As I Always Say
Ms. Frizzle as a Time Lord. I don't actually want to say anything else, because -- here's a fandom concept, executed perfectly, asking all the right questions and hitting all the right notes. Delightful.
Tribute
This doesn't actually have any Ms. Frizzle in it -- it's about the kids, some twenty years after third grade, and the way they all still have the enthusiasm for science and learning that they got then. It's just really delightful, and really true to the spirit of the books and the show.
MARVEL 1602
Sic Gloria Transit Mundi
This is basically just the insertion of Tony Stark into the 1602 universe, but I love it so much. It plays around with the world in lots of fun ways: instead of the arc reactor, Tony has the soul of Koschei the Deathless in his chest, for instance; there's also Shakespeare and the Gunpowder plot and all sorts of excellent period trappings. This fic also gave me so many Steve/Tony feelings, oh my goodness, I didn't know I had that many, and lots of Pepper Potts feelings, but I did know I had those.
MULAN
Writing With Chopsticks
Post-film Mulan, as a member of the Emperor's Council. This is in all ways lovely -- it's about the small ways Mulan keeps being entirely revolutionary and remaining true to herself as a woman in what shouldn't have to be a man's world, and it's also about her awkward delightful relationship with Shang. This one makes my heart sing.
SLINGS & ARROWS
People Who Don't Understand Brecht Don't Understand Life
A portrait of young Darren, in his acting days, in a production of Edward II costarring Geoffrey and directed by Oliver. It says so many great things about all three of them, and made me clutch my face with feelings a couple of times.
Scenes from a Cultural Exchange, or The Muppets Take New Burbage
This has, rightly, been recced by pretty much everyone, because it is totally amazing. Anna, Geoffrey, and Kermit, Gonzo and Darren, Ellen and Miss Piggy, Maria and Scooter, and Basil, Statler, and Waldorf. (Ellen and Miss Piggy are, by the slimmest of margins, my favorite part.) SO GREAT.
SPIRITED AWAY
By the World Forgot
Which weaves a lovely backstory for Kamaji from the boiler room. It fits the world perfectly and has exactly the right amount of fairytale-feel to it.
YOUNG WIZARDS
a dust of snow
Dairine isn't feeling in the holiday spirit. Roshaun gives her the hug that I desperately want to. Dairine is exactly the right amount of prickly here, still grieving her mom but fighting through it. I really just love stories about Dairine.
Automotive Testing Procedures
Kit and Ronan make a magic car. Carmela refuses to be left behind when they test it out. This is such a delightful slice of life; it's exactly what I imagine these kids get up to in between saving the world.
Remaking
A bit of errantry goes wrong, and Tom has to call Carl back to himself with words and memories. This is lovely, lots of the things I like best about this universe, and a great glimpse of the things that make Carl who he is.
