There are many things I should be doing right now, but I'm actually too panicked to do them (and I got a lot done today! just not the one specific thing that is panicking me) so I decided to celebrate/distract myself from feeling sick/&c by finishing up my extremely haphazard Stargate Atlantis rewatch. Although for s5 "rewatch" is a misnomer, because I hadn't seen any of these before.
Daedelus Variations:
+ Teyla used contractions! And words like okay! Maybe she's been doing that for a while, but Rachel was off having her baby and so I didn't see her for a couple of episodes, which made the difference more apparent. I also love that Rodney's panic/genius ratio basically balances out against Teyla's calm/basic systems knowledge ratio. Teyla does just as much to get them out of the giant sun universe as Rodney does!
+ I like the other aliens. Those guys were weird.
+ I kind of adored John's conversation with alt!John. And by enjoyed, I mean that while they were busy complimenting each other unto absurdity, I might have said aloud to the screen, "Oh my god, John, masturbate harder." I really hope no one was walking by my room just then. Context is everything.
+ RODNEY HOLDING A BABY. That is all. <333
The Shrine:
+ Oh jesus fuck. The scene on the pier. The scene on the pier made me cry. I can't even. THE ENTIRE SHOW IS WORTH THAT SCENE.
+ Actually, hell, I think this one is tied with Tao of Rodney for first place as favourite episode. I am still at least mildly skeptical of Rodney/Keller although at this point I feel like my reaction is just that [a] I'm skipping around and [b] I feel like there are a number of people that are better-suited for both of them, but that said, it's kind of sweet! More importantly this was a Team episode in the best possible way, with both Keller & Jeannie included in that dynamic, and it was just -- heartbreaking and fuzzy at the same time, I guess.
+ Also um John's FACE. And Rodney calling for him! And Rodney running to John when he thinks that everyone left! And the SCENE at the PIER. (Hey, I think I ship them. Just a bit.)
Remnants
+ I love that I didn't call hallucinatory!Kolya at all despite his appearance making no sense, but even though it was perfectly sane and normal to have Zelenka on Atlantis, the moment he complimented Rodney I went "HE'S NOT REAL." Bless.
+ dfdlkdfkjf help I think I just lost all coherent thought. "What you chose. I didn't have full control over your hallucination, or the direction it took. It was your mind driving the diversion; I merely played along." "You're saying I tortured myself." "You torture yourself every day, John." I WHAT IS THIS I CAN'T EVEN.
+ More coherently: when the alien device makes them hallucinate, Rodney hallucinates that Zelenka is willing to compliment him, Woolsey hallucinates an attractive woman who's into him, and John hallucinates Kolya fucking him up. I ... have no idea what to do with that. Except that I have really worrying fictional types, I guess.
Vegas
+ Okay, I admit that I watched this one for two reasons: it's the lead-in to the finale, which I also wanted to see, but much more importantly, ON-SCREEN AU. Not that we don't occasionally meet, say, Rod, or that other John who liked to compliment our John a lot, or &c &c, but that the entire thing takes place in the AU is like -- like fic. CRACKFIC. Crackfic where John is a bitter noir detective, be still my heart.
+ Also, uh, I am unreasonably attracted to the Rodney in this universe. Apparently the fastest way to fictionally win me over is to interrogate someone as terrifyingly as possible? (That's how RayK did it inside twenty minutes! I just did not expect it of Rodney, okay.)
+ I am SO SAD alt!John did not sit down in the chair. Not that it ... matters. And I sort of suspect alt!Rodney knows, and is a huge dick? OH GOD WHY DO I HAVE TO BE ATTRACTED TO AWFUL ALT!MCKAY INSTEAD OF OUR DORKY RODNEY. WHAT IS BROKEN IN ME.
+ ...No, I've figured it out. I'm just extremely easy for noir. I love Zelenka in his little glasses and his crazy hair, but you stick him in a snazzy suit and make him be all intense at Rodney and, uh, I'm kind of attracted to him too. I wish there was noir Teyla. Oh god do I wish there was noir Teyla.
+ ...And wow, they actually killed him. I suspect that may have been a kindness to that John, though, because it really does feel like the moral of this episode is The Team All Need Each Other. I mean, yes, Ronon and Teyla weren't around to reinforce this, but you've got Rodney going "We couldn't have done it without him!" but then staying in his nice base and not yelling at John enough for doing stupid heroics alone in the desert. Oh man.
Enemy at the Gate
+ TODD IS MY FAVOURITE WRAITH. I mean, I expect that if people are in the habit of having favourite Wraith he is probably up there? I have been deeply fond of him since Common Ground, but oh, Todd. <3
+ I'm slightly brokenhearted about them having clone!Carson pilot flying Atlantis and making John do Last Stand on Earth, because John belongs with Atlantis, okay? But on the other hand, John has to do Last Stands. It's his thing.
+ DEATHWISH DEATHWISH DEATHWISH. OH JOHN. I am pretty sure I would have been shrieking this a lot more if I'd watched all of the various series finales, because not only are Last Stands John's thing, but specifically Last Stands With Nukes are his thing. sfkdafd are you insane?
+ *handwaves* And then after the end they send Todd through the Stargate back to Pegasus as a gesture of goodwill, and they all spend like three months on Earth being perfectly content before John goes "Well, I still woke up all the damn Wraith" and Teyla's like "And I want to know what's going on with my people" and Ronon's like "Yeah, Atlantis is cool but there are still Wraith alive so I need to kill them more" and Rodney's all "I haven't saved any galaxy from a major crisis in WEEKS! This is unacceptable!" and then they go back home to Pegasus. Keller and Woolsey optional, I guess, because in my head the Pegasus Crew is Team + Elizabeth & maybe Carson. *shrug*
So the ending made me twitchy and unsatisfied; it's possible this is because the moral of SGA seems to be "ATLANTIS IS AWESOME. PEGASUS IS AWESOME. WOO WHO CARES ABOUT EARTH REALLY" but it's also possible this is because I'm freaking out about unrelated things and now I've run out of SGA to watch. Who knows.

Your last point on the Vegas episode explains why I keep seeing AUs for the AU pop up on delicious. Also, it sounds both terrifying and awesome and I suspect I will want to punch alt!Rodney in the face.
no subject
Ahaha oh my god what are the AUs for the AU? Do people not want noir!John to be dead? Because noir!John is kind of broken and like I said it was maybe a kindness to kill him. Also, the Vegas episode is just ... weird. Like, they decided they were going to film a CSI-type show whether you wanted it or not, only it had, y'know, Sheppard. And WRAITH. But also the TMI cam and random zoomy shots and a montage of a poker game! Just. WHAT. ...And yeah, I don't think you'd like noir!Rodney much. XD

What I expected from Vegas was that altJohn would join up with altRodney and they would GO TO ATLANTIS or at least start to form a team...or that the constructed AU would intersect somehow with the main universe. It seemed like there were a lot of possibilities in that episode that were wasted.

AltJohn and altRodney were kind of all over each other, actually! I WANTED RODNEY TO SAVE HIM. I'm hoping there's lots of fic that explores the wasted possibilities from that episode too?
no subject
Exactly! They have him getting saved, and then he and Rodney become a thing somehow, AS THEY SHOULD.

THIS. YES. EXACTLY. THANK YOU.
