Geoffrey was tragically straight and that made him even more appealing to Darren, because Darren was, at that stage, all about tragic unrequited love and the torments of fate and &c. Geoffrey was quite put off by this, and Darren likes to pretend that their duel in the quadrangle at midnight was their epic breakup even though they were never dating in the first place.
2. He doesn't believe in petty constructs like gender! (The fact that his entire Romeo and Juliet cast apparently do was endlessly frustrating to him.) Nor does he personally believe in labels, though he grudgingly acknowledges that they may be of some small use to less enlightened people. (I think he's tried to join various GLBT theater-affiliated groups before, but this is about the point where they punch him in the face.)
