I can see the two of them together setting off on this quest, Sam being all self-righteous about the Ring and refusing to let Gene get hold of it, because "God knows what you'd do with it, you bloody Neanderthal". And at the end, when he's cowering and whinging and refusing to give it up, Gene just thumps him 'round the earhole, takes it off him, and chunks it into the lava. "You daft git, you wouldn't let me carry it for you, and now I'm gonna have to carry your sorry arse all the way home to the Shire? Where the hell are those Eagles?"
