happy crying
I was actually a bit dubious for the first half-hour; it was fine, but it wasn't spectacular or really happy-making. And then the last twenty minutes happened, and I cried all over everything and beamed a lot and had FEELINGS, so I am counting this one a win.
The kids they had were quite lovely, but OMG MADGE. She saved everyone! She did it by being clever and a bit mad and having a magic brain! I really love the way Moffat keeps writing women who are resourceful in the face of weird circumstances, and save the day with their magic brains, and even get happy endings. Hearts in my eyes!
Bill Bailey & co were quite good, too! They weren't overused, and they were funny, and I really liked that they weren't the baddies, and neither were the trees; it was just a weird situation that everyone used to their best advantage, and it mostly worked out all right for everyone. (Also, lol, ACID RAIN OVER NARNIA, idk why that's so funny, but it is.)
And Eleven! Oh my goodness, I love him so much. SO MUCH. He was able to carry the ridiculous bits, like being SO EXCITED about the tricked-out country manor and the sonic's inability to work on wood. I did the usual amount of faceclutching when he talked about humans happy-crying, and how he needed Madge to remember her home because he doesn't know how to have that depth of emotion anymore; seriously, my favorite thing about Eleven remains his ability to be very old and very young at the same time. I LOVE HIM SO, I think I already said that, don't care, LOVE.
I started tearing up around when Madge was remembering her husband to get them home, and happy-cried for real when they all discovered she'd taken him home via the vortex (I called the husband being saved probably about ten minutes in, but that didn't make it less satisfying when I was right), and then I was ... kind of a crying mess around the Ponds, and then ELEVEN HAD HAPPY CRYING AND OH GOD I CAN'T EVEN. I didn't actually get spoiled ahead of time about the Ponds being in this episode, so it was just -- so delightful and lovely to discover that Eleven did get to spend Christmas with his family.
I am kind of aglow, is what I'm saying here, and this may be the first Christmas special I will actually rewatch on Christmas just cos, as opposed to rewatching as part of a larger rewatch project. Yes. Loved this one.
