I don't have it in me at present to post properly about either of these things, but I made a DS9 vid for Equinox Vids, and Doctor Who was once again lovely this week.

Thank you all very much for your comments on my last post. <3
Oh man, I had Pokemon Go running while I was down in Indiana, and I scored an Up-Grade from one of the two pokestops between the train station and the Dunes. Apparently the only thing the Up-Grade works on is a Porygon, but I only have one Porygon and I don’t know if I want to evolve it…

DECISIONS. Spark guide my hand.

(Spark says “You have three Porygon candy. If you’re gonna upgrade it you’re gonna have to walk like a billion miles first. Just FYI.”)

Pay no attention to the fact that I haven't updated in months oh my god. Still alive, still fine, etc. But my writing energies have been going to, variously, a) writing/editing at work, [more responsibility = good? i guess? but uuughh I feel like I write a lot on a daily basis now.] b) writing assorted strident metafilter comments and c) writing fic, which I am procrastinating from doing AT THIS VERY MOMENT. I'm two scenes away from finishing it, so of course I'm going to come guilt-post here instead of just goddamn buckling down to finish it. I'll post it this weekend ;__; I'll try, at least.

I'm taking a weekend off from protesting, which I also feel a little guilty about, but I feel like I'm in downtown LA all the damn time now for one protest or another. An immigrant rights thing here, Women's Day strike there, science march, tax day march, etc. I took this weekend off in the interests of just sleeping in.

I ostensibly put some Colin Stetson on to focus on writing, but lol whoops, I'm too into the music. I really liked his new album that just came out yesterday, All This I Do for Glory, but after listening to that on a loop at work yesterday while I powered through drafting a few things, I wanted to return to one of his earlier albums that I hadn't listened through all the way more than once, New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light. Good god, what a fucking experience it is to listen to one of these straight through, with the sound up loud. It's sort of like being out in a storm, being buffeted by rain and wind, and feeling equal parts thrilled and terrified.

Like, not gonna lie, this is, at best, challenging music. It's one guy howling and screaming into a bass saxophone, clomping away at the keys, while, occasionally, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon pops in to either sing beautifully or roar with astonishingly metal brutality. The answer to just what genre this music is can only be answered with ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But holy shit is there something deeply satisfying in the sheer forceful physicality of it, or sometimes the meditative drone of it. One man's breath powers all of this, no loops or overdubbing, and the embodied physicality of that really comes across. Not least because you can sometimes hear him breathing. Rarely have I ever felt music in my own body the way I feel this, where the music feels like it's filling my own chest and lungs.

Also, in this our new national nightmare, I find there is something incredibly cathartic in listening to one man howling and screaming in seeming agony and rage into a fuck-off giant saxophone. Like, objectively, I am aware that Hunted is sort of...punishing, as music goes, and that probably a lot of people would react to it with "....this is music?" Meanwhile I take a happy deep breath in every time Stetson lets loose with another eldritch monster of the deep howl through that saxophone. I think I see the appeal of heavy metal now.

I tried a couple of shows out and rejected them:

Hap and Leonard (on Netflix)
I wanted to like this because the guy who plays Omar on the Wire (Michael K. Williams) plays a gay Vietnam vet. But after a couple of episodes, I didn't like any of the characters. Williams' character, Leonard, was OK, but everyone else was mean and horrible.

Limitless (on Netflix)

A movie spin-off. Brian thinks of himself as a loser and a disappointment to his dad, even though his dad is supportive. He takes a drug called NZT, which temporarily turns him into a super-genious. I enjoyed the pilot because he used his genious for a bunch of things, like diagnosing his father's illness, solving a murder, playing music really well in a park, and talking to people about their problems (social intelligence!). But in the 2nd episode, it's clear that this is just another procedural about a white guy who is a rule-breaking genious for the FBI. He gets away with his rule-breaking because he produces results (and also b/c privilege). The science in the 2nd episode was also pretty bad: an engineered flu strain that was supposedly used for assasinations. Riiiiight. I stopped watching.

I settled on an addictive, violent, perhaps overly dramatic, gripping show on Hulu: BLACK SAILS. This has lots of queerness and is very pretty.

The first Rita Dove poem I ever posted, way back in 2009, was "Ludwig Van Beethovens' Return to Vienna" from Sonata Mulattica: A Life in Five Movements and a Short Play (New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 2009). It's still one of my favorites, and although I've posted a whole lot of Rita Dove in the years since, I haven't been back to Sonata Mulattica since 2010. I bought a copy a couple of years ago, though, and it's time. To tell the truth, I really recommend just going and reading the whole book; but nevertheless, here is another one I love, for some of the same reasons:

(cross-posted from wiscon-talk Google group)

Hi all,

I've booked a room with two double beds for WisCon 41, and so far there are just two of us in it. I'd love to find more roommates!

About me: I'm a 36yo non-binary femme (they/them/theirs). This is my first WisCon, and I'm travelling solo. I'm allergic to smoke and critters with fur (so I come from a pet-free home); I do best in no/low-scent environments.

About the room: This is a Concourse-level quad room. It's costing me about $166 per night including taxes/fees, which I plan to split evenly among as many of us use it each night. I have the room Thursday evening through Tuesday morning (and so far there are two of us in it Thurs-Sun nights).

Quiet hours: Because of my chronic illness, I need to get a lot of sleep -- which means I'm looking at going to bed around 11:30pm or so each night and sleeping until 9 or 10 am. I wear earplugs and a mask, so lights on / people using phones/laptops / whispered conversations are fine, but loud conversations or having folks over for get-togethers are a no-go.

If you're interested in becoming a roommate or have questions, feel free to write me at this email address.

Best,
Kit

Do you ever read a fic and it's just so right and true and real that it just burrows into your heart and makes a home there because it's everything you always wanted, but never knew you needed? Yeah, this fic is like that for me.

It's a fake-dating, high school AU and I'll be honest, neither of those are things are go-to fic tropes for me. And yet, I spent all day today, in between some really, spectacularly unpleasant stuff that I can't talk about, just soaking in this fic. Basking in it and everything it represents.

It's about queerness and community and finding trust, when trust seems impossible. And it's about being seventeen and queer in a conservative town, with fucked up brain-chemistry and crippling self-doubt and overwhelming expectations and basically, what it was like to be ME. This fic was like looking into a mirror.

Only this mirror-me got the things I desperately needed and I'm not sure could ever have had. Because I went to high school in the mid-90s and although a remarkable number of my high school friends have since come out, we never -- could never -- talk about it at the time. I didn't even have the language or self-awareness to talk about this shit. Not about being queer. Not about my fucked up brain chemistry. Not about the crippling fear that I was smart, but not smart enough. (If I could have talked about the second one, the third one might not have come back to bite me in the ass so much in university).

So, yeah, this fic is going to stick with me for a long fucking time, in the way that all the best fiction does. It's one of the most honest stories I've read in a long, long time.

We are planning to do a code push late this weekend, at approximately 8pm PDT / 11pm EDT / 3am UTC on Sunday, Apr 30 (or May 1 for you transatlantic types.).

I don't have a list of changes for you yet, but most will fall into the following categories: things users have complained about to support volunteers, things support volunteers have complained about to developers, things [staff profile] denise has complained about not working the way she expects them to (and as we all know, The Boss is Always Right), and things that were printing warnings over and over in the production server logs, making it hard to spot when less frequent, more urgent errors were being printed. Oh, and also all the unused code I ripped out at the roots, which if you notice that, I did it wrong.

To sum up: we are rolling out a bunch of requested changes, so thank you all for your feedback!

If you're new to Dreamwidth and interested in tracking our development process, our commit logs are published to [site community profile] changelog and [community profile] changelog_digest, and every month or so, one of our volunteers will translate those often-cryptic entries into witty, informative code tours! The most recent one was published on April 1, so we're about due for a new one. Hint, hint.

We'll update here again to let you know when the code push is imminent!

Comment with a fanfic trope and, if you'd like, a character/pairing, and I will tell you:
• how likely I am to write it
• Maybe a few lines of theoretical fic

Sometimes you've just gotta throw up your hands and post some real classic Langston Hughes.

I, too )
(Consisting of: Alanna: The First Adventure, In the Hand of the Goddess,
The Woman Who Rides Like a Man, Lioness Rampant)

Hmmm not quite sure what to say about these books! It's been quite a while since I've reread them since this was never the Tamora Pierce series that I was most captivated by.

They're obviously her first books, and have a variety of flaws (some plot points/character choices that don't quite make sense, the well-meaning racism that's racism nonetheless, the uncomfortable dynamics in how some of Alanna's romantic relationships are portrayed, and so forth) but the books are nonetheless a charming quick read, if you can look past those factors.

Also its brand of feminism is...of its era (Alanna is Not Like Other Girls! And so forth.) but it's well-meaning and was hugely important for its time.

And I still have huge quantities of childhood nostalgia for these books. I care about these characters so much!

AMC renewed Into the Badlands for a third seasons almost simultaneously with NBC pulling Powerless from its schedule, with no date for the completed episodes that haven't aired yet, which pretty much means it was already cancelled.

Do I be happy or sad?  I can't tell.

Unfortunately, all the Freshman shows whose renewals I'm antsy about-Powerless, Timeless, and Emerald City-are NBC, and it doesn't look goof for any of them.
